Posted by Graham_Land in Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, 6 May 2011
At least 15 pilot whales have run aground in the Florida Keys.
The below raw video from the Associated Press shows a whale struggling in what looks like a mangrove swamp and two more stuck in shallows. According to Ft Lauderdale/Miami local news for station WSVN-TV, a volunteer rescue effort is taking place to help the pilot whales with help from the US Navy.

Europe has much bigger carbon footprint – when trade is factored in
China's soaring greenhouse gas emissions are significantly fueled by Western consumerism. That is the conclusion of a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). According to an article in Time magazine, '22.5% of the carbon emitted in China is actually exported to other countries'. So in a way, unofficial 'carbon markets' are already well in place – with China creating more emissions by manufacturing products for export to richer, more developed nations. The rich nations effectively...
Victims of crisis: Spain’s horses
Back in 2010 I posted about how bad economic times in Ireland were resulting in a large amount of neglected and abandoned horses in the country. Now Spain, in the throws of economic crisis, is experiencing a similar problem. In Spain, as in Ireland, when cash was plentiful many horse-mad citizens splashed out on having their very own equine companion (or trophy as the case may be). But now that times are tough it’s old Sugar Foot who gets the boot. Curiously,...
UK’s Clean Energy Cashback scheme encourages households to generate own green power
When Germany introduced a similar FIT scheme 10 years ago -- but with targets of ten percent -- it started a green energy revolution in the country, turning it into a European leader in renewables. – CNN The UK government announced on February 1st that it would pay households that generate renewable energy. The scheme, called Clean Energy Cashback, is a feed in-tariff or 'FIT' system similar to those already operating in many European countries and parts of the United States. What...
Videos: Manila flooding
photo by Zer Cabatuan (Flickr CC) The worst flooding to hit the Philippines in 3 years has left much of the capital city Manila underwater. At least 19 people have died (9 family members in a single landslide in Quezon City) and a total of 1.2 residents of metro Manila were affected by the monsoon rains. After 12 days of rain, sun was forecast for Thursday with cleanup and rescue efforts underway as of Wednesday. From the Associated Press: Manila was drenched with more...
US Offers Tax Credit for Homeowners with Wind Turbines
Wind turbines, one of the more efficient renewable energy, have traditionally been available from large-scale operations and used by businesses. But recently, a number of wind turbines have been available on the market for home use. The US Government has offered a hefty tax credit for all homeowners who choose to use wind turbines. Users can get up to a 30% write-off come tax time for the expenses incurred purchasing and installing wind turbines. Users will also have the advantage...
Basically vegetarian: Facebook’s Zuckerberg vows to only eat what he kills
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to only eat meat that he kills with his own hands. For most softies in the rich, developed world this would mean becoming a vegetarian by default. Unlike exceptions such as Ted Nugent and other rugged hunter-fisher types, we are either too squeamish, too lazy or in some cases too compassionate to kill our own food. We’d prefer to forgo such barbarism and hard work, pop a tofu burger in the microwave and watch TV. But...
Ride With the Sun in Bologna, Italy
Iosa Ghini Associati has created a new, eco-friendly monorail system in Italy: The Solar Energy Belt. The monorail travels between the city of Bologna and the Aeroporto G. Marconi di Bologna International Airport, with intermediate stops at Lazaretto—where the station also doubles as a highway overpass. The total system is relatively short; approximately 3.16 miles (5084 meters) in length, to be exact. But despite its size, it will be doing wonders for people and the environment. The Solar Energy Belt itself has...
Harry Potter threatens owl population in India
Popularity and consumption are strange things. No one can deny they go hand in hand, since at least to some degree that which is popular is, in fact, consumable. Consumerism… I hate the word. According to Wikipedia it “is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods or services in ever greater amounts.” I agree. Consumption is based on the ever-growing desire to have and to own, at...
New airplanes are greener, but there will be a lot more of them in the air
Pipe dreams of a future of eco-friendly travel go up in smoke when you look at the projected numbers for air travel. In short, total emissions from flying are set to skyrocket. The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner is being touted as 20% more fuel efficient than its rivals, lighter and more durable due to it’s carbon fiber composite construction, with better air quality, more leg room, larger windows and a quieter, more comfortable ride. But according to a report by the...
Market for fair trade goods grows in Germany
In Germany, fair trade cafés and fair trade boutiques, known as ‘world shops’ are growing in popularity. There are over 30 world shops in the Berlin-Brandenburg area alone. Fair trade doesn’t just mean coffee or chocolate. There are around 1,000 fair trade products available in the country. Germany’s ‘Fair Trade Week’ highlights the benefits of socially responsible goods, including better wages for producers in poor countries, which in turn means that consumers and businesses must be willing to pay higher prices. FA!R...
