Activists in China save dogs from slaughter
Posted by Graham_Land in Actions, 19 Apr 2011
A truck containing several hundred dogs was stopped by activists on a road in Beijing on Friday. A supportive crowd of some 200 people gathered and the driver was eventually paid off to give up his canine cargo, many of whom were in poor health.
Though the eating of dogs is not uncommon in some Chinese provinces, these dogs were not livestock. They had apparently been stolen from their owners – some still had collars to prove it, though the driver claimed they had been purchased.
The interception of the dogs was the latest bold action by pet-lovers in China, where growing awareness of animal rights is colliding with centuries-old culinary practices.

The animal welfare activists, including China Small Animals Protection Association, paid some €12,300 ($17,600) to free the dogs after 15 hours of wrangling. The dogs will be given medical attention where necessary and put up for adoption.

Study shows Chernobyl animals still suffer from radiation
A survey of wildlife around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine – site of the worst nuclear accident in history – has shown that biodiversity there is declining. On April 26, 1986 explosions at the Chernobyl plant sent radioactive fallout into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Europe, eventually killing thousands. 24 years later, the downwind city of Pripyat is still off limits, though some have returned there illegally to farm. The wildlife around Chernobyl has been the stuff...
California: Solar farms pit govt against native tribes
A fast track approach by the US government towards certain renewable energy projects has drawn lawsuits and protests from some Native American groups and environmentalists in California. US President Barack Obama has set a goal of sourcing 80% of the country’s electricity from clean projects, but some of the projects are on lands considered sacred to Native American tribes. Environmental groups are also concerned that the projects could hard sensitive desert ecology. Government officials claim to have consulted tribal organizations and have...
How Green Is My City?
It’s funny how times change. A city slicker of our time could not possibly imagine the life in the big city before the industrial revolution. Imagine, roads packed with horse drawn carriages, with their bells ringing rather then car horns; people fanning themselves with fancy hand-fans in summer and fireplaces casting their warm glow in winter. These cities were definitely more boring then today’s megalopolis, with their snarling traffic, grey polluted skies and air conditioners and heaters spewing green gases. With...
Iceland Volcano Erupts After 200 Years of Inactivity
Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted on Saturday, forcing at least 500 people to evacuate. Most have returned home since, with the exception of 14 farms. Although the eruption resulted in further tremors, spurts of lava and steam on Monday, there is bigger cause for concern. History dictates that when this particular volcano erupts, the Katla volcano will also erupt shortly after. The Katla volcano is located under the giant Myrdalsjokull glacier. An eruption of that magnitude will mean flooding disasters and major...
IWC Whaling Conference = Epic Fail; Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Wanted by Interpol
It seems that whenever there is a major (or at least rather anticipated) conference or meeting that is supposed to solve some ongoing environmental issue, it always fails. Either the people at the meeting can’t agree on anything and it’s all called off, or they scrap up some last minute deal that really amounts to nothing, or the decision is postponed for 6 month to a year (or longer). The latest IWC whaling conference in Morocco is no different. Nothing was...
New Pipeline Project may Pose Threat to Siberian Tigers
Tigers have been taking the news world by storm lately. We caught a first glimpse of a mother Sumatran tiger and her cubs. We found out that China’s tigers are in a rather bad situation. Now, the news has shifted to Siberia. A new Siberian pipeline has been leaking as of late. Thus far, 300 cubic meters (10,600 cubic feet) of oil has leaked from the pipeline and has covered an area 10 yards (meters) wide and 1.2 miles (2 km)...
Veined Octopus Displays Intelligence Through Use of Coconuts
The octopus is an amazing animal. As a type of cephalopod, it is related to other sea creatures, such as mollusks, squid and cuttlefish. All of these—including the octopus—are invertebrates and are considered to be rather unintelligent. But leave it to nature to prove scientists wrong, because it has happened yet again. Even though octopi lack a bone structure and come from a family of seemingly simple creatures, they certainly make up for what they lack. They are capable of changing...
My Amazon Experience
In 1996 I went on a tour of Brazil with an American punk band called Shelter, in which I was playing at the time. It was for the most part a surreal, yet hectic schedule of concerts in front of hundreds of fans in metropolises several of which we’d never heard of. Brazil is a massive country of ironic extremes: it is the largest Catholic country and easily one of the most sexualized. When I was first there, the Brazilian...
Go Green: Ways to Stay Cool During Summer
This summer has been practically unbearable, as far as temperature goes. The sun is blazing, wildfires are sprouting up all over the place, and this past June had some of the hottest temperatures on record. Sure, you could turn on the air conditioner or a bunch of fans, but they use electricity and waste energy—especially if they are cooling off rooms that don’t need it. Here are some tips and tricks you can do to keep yourself cooled off, without...
Arrr Pirates Responsible for Global Warming?
Today marks the 14th annual International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Did you know that the decline in piracy is responsible for global warming, earthquakes and other natural disasters? At least, it is according to the parody religion of Pastafarianism (aka The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster). In 2005, Bobby Henderson created the Pastafarianism religion as a satirical response to the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education that would require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative...
