Second volcano erupts on Java: Mount Bromo spewing hot ash
Posted by Murielle in Climate & Change, Nature, 26 Nov 2010
While the Merapi volcano on the Indonesian island of Java is still active, a second volcano – Mount Bromo – erupted today, around 5:40 pm local time. Mount Bromo, a volcano located about 275 km (170 miles) east of Mount Merapi, spew dark grey ash cloud of half a kilometer (0,3 miles) into the air.
Although the Bromo volcano erupts at least once a year and although it currently does not pose a treat to the residents of the region surrounding it, Indonesian officials remain cautious as the Bromo volcano usually does not spew hot ash or debris.
Mount Merapi’s activity has decreased since it first started erupting on the 29th of October. At least 322 people died due to the volcano’s eruption.

Fin whale that stranded on Danish shores was 140 years old
Last summer, a fin whale got lost in the shallow waters of the Vejle Fjord between Sweden and Denmark. The animal, worn out by a long journey, was unable to reach the sea on it’s own again. Attempts from Danish rescue teams where sadly enough unable to help the whale back to sea and the animal eventually died. The fin whale, which was 17 meters (56 ft) long and weighed about 24 tons, turned out to be between 130 and 140...
China: Good news for forests, bad news for hippos?
The Chinese government is adopting an incentives scheme to preserve the Asian giant's fragile forests and biodiversity. According to the new legislation, wealthy urbanized regions in China will be obliged to compensate areas that preserve their natural riches, notably forests that sequester carbon. This figure - which takes into account carbon sequestration, water conservation, biodiversity protection and biomass production – suggests the administration is seeking not just a new set of values, but a new role for itself now that the...
iPhone application to measure wind speed
If you live in a breezy area and would like to invest in your own wind turbine, you can determine whether your idea is feasible by using an application to assess wind speed. You can do this by simply holding up your iPhone in the air. Developed by Mariah Power, the program uses the microphone to pick up the wind’s noise and calculates its speed based on decibel level. Results are said to be accurate within 1.5 mph, it can then...
Video: Croatia’s natural treasure
Check out this video on Velebit national park in Croatia from the Guardian. Velebit encompasses majestic mountain peaks and a wide variety of untamed flora and fauna. It is one of Europe’s most pristine and lesser-known natural areas. The Velebit Mountains are part of the Dinaric Alps and the highest range in Croatia. The park contains many species of plant that are unique to the area, as well as local varieties of wolf, marten, bear and lynx. ...
The White House is Officially Going Solar…Again!
Remember the article a few months ago about the Globama Campaign? If not, the campaign was an idea to get the White House to go solar; more specifically, solar company Sungevity offered to install a rooftop solar panel system on the President's infamous home for free. It would seem all that campaigning and petitioning finally paid off because the White House is officially announcing plans to go solar! I'm not sure if they took Sungevity's offer specifically, but what I do...
Study: Global Snake Populations are On a Sharp Decline
Snakes can be found all over the world. You might spot one while on a hike or see one lying across a road. They might sneak into your campground or slither through your own backyard. Some people love these creatures and others are absolutely terrified of them. I’ve come across a fair share of them in my life, both venomous and not, and while some sightings seem to happen more often around here it’s an entirely different story for the...
Gender and the environment: Climate change affects women more than men
CNN's Going Green reports that the inequalities of gender in many developing societies are intensified by the increased hardships brought on by the changing climate. It is the developing world that contributes less to global emissions, benefits less from them and suffers more because of them. Within these poorer nations, it is women more than men – especially older women – who bear the brunt of climate change. Young people – chiefly young men – are far more likely to leave...
5 Gyres: A Look at the Pollution of Our Oceans
When we think of ocean pollution, our thoughts will most likely turn to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch: a rather large collection of plastic, sludge, and other debris floating about the North Pacific Ocean. While the Pacific Garbage Patch is probably the most well-known and most cited, did you know there are actually 5 trash gyres polluting our oceans? 5Gyres.org is educating the public about this very problem and what is being done to clean things up and prevent further pollution....
Radiation from Fukushima discovered in California kelp
About a month after the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, radioactive particles were detected in giant kelp samples off the California coast. The level 7 nuclear incident resulted from the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the region around Fukushima, Japan in March of 2011. In a recent study California State University marine biologists tested giant kelp up and down the coastline of the state, from Laguna Beach to Santa Cruz, and found radioactive iodine, suggesting that radiation that leaked...
