Second volcano erupts on Java: Mount Bromo spewing hot ash
Posted by Murielle in Climate Change, Nature, 26 Nov 2010
While the Merapi volcano on the Indonesian island of Java is still active, a second volcano – Mount Bromo – erupted today, around 5:40 pm local time. Mount Bromo, a volcano located about 275 km (170 miles) east of Mount Merapi, spew dark grey ash cloud of half a kilometer (0,3 miles) into the air.
Although the Bromo volcano erupts at least once a year and although it currently does not pose a treat to the residents of the region surrounding it, Indonesian officials remain cautious as the Bromo volcano usually does not spew hot ash or debris.
Mount Merapi’s activity has decreased since it first started erupting on the 29th of October. At least 322 people died due to the volcano’s eruption.

Endangered Species of the Week: Numbat
Species: Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting Fact: The numbat can eat around 20,000 termites a day. That’s 10% of its body weight! This small, carnivorous marsupial is an expert termite hunter. It spends its day in search of its favourite prey, walking with its nose to the ground, sniffing and turning over small pieces of wood in search of shallow underground termite galleries. It then collects the termites with its long, sticky tongue, which can grow to over 10 centimetres in length....
Bumble Bee Turbines: The Latest Buzz in Sustainable Energy
By now, many of us have seen wind turbines in use, whether in a field, on a mountain or—most recently—off shore. They loom overhead like modernized windmill-type structures, all with the same edged form. Now, what if someone changed that form; what if they took a structure built to help nature and transformed it into something inspired by nature. That’s exactly what those at Green Wavelength have done. This green, California-based company has been creating new wind turbine prototypes, modeled after...
CNN – Sudan’s billion-dollar oil industry may be a curse
Here is another video report from CNN on suspected pollution in Southern Sudan due to the oil industry there. Unity State in Southern Sudan is not only home to huge petroleum reserves, but also to the largest inland wetlands in the world. The strong divide in the African nation between North and South has played out in a violent and bitter civil war. It seems that the split may be continuing within the oil industry: the North reaps the benefits,...
Climate change news – worse than you thought
The 'doomsayers' brayed about climate change. They said ignore it at your peril. And despite some token political efforts and changes in public consciousness concerning environmental issues, governments and industries pretty much did just that: ignored it. An article by the Associated Press states that greenhouse gasses have increased even the worst predictions made by climate scientists only four years ago. This information comes from the US Department of Energy. Global CO2 emissions jumped by 6% in just one year from 2009...
Does recycling work?
I used to hear that recycling was bunk; that it was at best in an initial or transitional phase, but currently an inefficient use of energy and resources, and even potentially polluting. Critics called it a massive, coordinated publicity stunt devised to placate the public and convince us that we’re doing something good when we’re really all just having a picnic on the beach, blissfully unaware of the toxic tidal wave of trash that will eventually kill us all. That...
Q: It is said that organic cosmetics are safer for consumers and the environment. What makes them better?
A: Organic cosmetics are made from natural, plant-based ingredients from certified organic plantations. If they aren’t vegan, they still don’t contain any substances that come from dead animals, but ingredients such as honey and milk protein may be used in their composition. The amount of harsh substances like parabens and SLS that non-organic cosmetics often contain, is approved as safe, but things aren’t that simple. If you use many cosmetics one after the other, like a cleansing gel, mask, toner and then...
Famed Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Becomes PETA’s Latest Target
Groundhog Day is around the corner and if you happen to be a Groundhog Day enthusiast, you may have heard of Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney is a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil would be their famed resident groundhog. This groundhog has been depicted in the movie Groundhog Day, had a race held in his honor by Bam Margera, and actually lives a better life than some people. Phil is responsible for the well-known groundhog tradition: if he sees his shadow,...
Gulf Coast Oil Spill Update: A Look at BP’s Ongoing Failures
The Gulf Coast Oil Spill has become nothing short of unspeakable incompetence. It’s been well over a month since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and the spill began and there is still no hope in sight of recovery and BP has yet to come up with a method that actually works. Their so-called “top kill” method more or less amounted to nothing more than plugging the well—a clogged drain or spout if you will and like all other efforts, that failed,...
Climate change can bring more floods AND droughts to the UK
Climate change, by its very definition, suggests that geographical areas become hotter or drier or wetter as the case may be. Some places even become colder, while others experience severe fluctuations in weather, such as an increase in storms or droughts. Anthropogenic climate change – climate change caused by human activity – is predicted to affect weather conditions throughout the globe, the most vulnerable being hot countries that already experience extreme weather. According to the World Bank's list of the 12...
Endangered Species of the Week – Queen Alexandra’s birdwing
Species: Queen Alexandra’s birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting Fact: Queen Alexandra’s birdwing is the world’s largest species of butterfly With an enormous wingspan of up to 28 centimetres, Queen Alexandra’s birdwing deservedly has the title of the world’s largest butterfly. Vibrantly coloured, this magnificent butterfly feeds only from a single species of vine. The vine contains a toxic substance which, when consumed by the caterpillar, makes them distasteful to potential predators. This trait is advertised by the caterpillar’s bright, conspicuous colouration, but...

So just before midnight Java time.
Wondering if anyone has more news on this. My wife is about 3 hours Mount Bromo, in the city of Jember on Java. She said a light rain of ash was coming down and some strong gust of wind.
