Donate a tweet a day to help Greenpeace and other causes that matter to you
Posted by Murielle in Sustainable living, 26 Nov 2010
Who doesn’t have a tweet to spare or share for a good cause?
Just recently, getting my daily dose of Greenpeace online news, I noticed the “donate 1 tweet a day” link on the organizations website. This link led me to the Greenpeace space on the Justcoz.org website, an online relay system that lets you donate tweets to help raise awareness about issues that matter to you.
The website lists all the causes that you can donate tweets to. There is also a search box to find causes based on keywords or particular search terms. If you have a cause you’d like to raise awareness about, the website lets you submit your own cause.
Joining a cause is really easy. By clicking on the join button justcoz.org interacts with your twitter account, allowing the organization behind the cause you selected to distribute tweets through your account.
Sharing and supporting has never been easier. You have no excuse

Oil spill cover-up in Egypt’s Red Sea?
Last month an oil spill was discovered in Egypt’s Red Sea by Egyptian authorities. The spill polluted a stretch of coastline dotted with popular tourist resorts. According to a Reuters Africa report, the Egyptian oil minister has claimed that none of the 188 oil platforms in the Gulf of Suez are responsible for the spill and that the oil may have come from water used to clean out a tanker. Local environmental groups are skeptical of the Egyptian government’s claims and are...
Top 10 Green Widgets, Applications, and Websites
Across the internet, you’ll find a world of information on environmental news, how to live green, how to calculate your carbon footprint, tips on saving energy, and so forth. More sites, programs, widgets and applications come out every single day. Obviously, you can’t keep track of them all. How do you decide which ones are worth checking out? Are they legitimate programs or just another form of greenwashing? Well, I’ve tried to save you some of the guesswork by creating this...
Environmental journalist Bill McKibben breaks down Copenhagen
‘It would mean sticking whole industries with trillions of dollars in unrecoverable sunk costs (all those coal-fired power plants whose financing depends on a 40-year run). It would mean paying a huge political price. It would mean aiming for a solution, not an agreement.’ –Bill McKibben If COP15 really is ‘do or die’ as it is being billed – indeed as predictions from climate scientists are saying – then the world is almost definitely going to choose the latter. That’s to...
Obama Announces Plans to Reimburse US Homeowners for Energy Conserving Upgrades
Do you live in the US? Do you live a green or environmentally friendly lifestyle? Do you want to make your home more energy efficient (but perhaps lack the funds or time to do so)? If you answered yes to all 3 questions, you may be interested in this bit of news. Earlier this week, President Barack Obama announced plans to reimburse US homeowners who make changes to their home that will conserve energy. In a statement delivered at Georgia’s Savannah...
Endangered Species of the Week: California condor
Species: California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) Status: Critically Endangered (CR) Interesting Fact: The California condor urinates on its own legs to keep cool! The California condor is a member of the New World vulture family, and has an impressive wingspan of just less than three metres. Native to North America, the California condor soars over large distances on its immense wings, using its vision to spot carrion on which to feed. Its large size means it dominates other scavengers at a carcass, except the...
Denver Introduces First US Bike Sharing Program
Bicycle sharing programs are sure becoming popular these days. Last week, I reported a new bicycle system that started in Mexico City this year. Today, the program becomes a tad bit more local (or at least national). Denver launched the first bike sharing program in the US last week. Named B-Cycle, the program offers about 400 red Trek B-cycles at 40 B-stations throughout the Colorado city. Those who wish to take part in the B-Cycle program simply have to register online or...
Here comes the neighbourhood: Warm water mammals in UK waters
A new kind of immigrant is being spotted in British seas. Species of whales, dolphins and seals, which are customarily at home in more tropical waters, are making their way to the UK, perhaps due to rising sea temperatures. If climate change continues to warm British waters, as predicted by scientists, more aquatic mammals will follow their food sources from the warmer climes of Africa and the Pacific all the way to the UK. The widespread use of digital cameras is making...
Now You Sea It, Now You Don’t: Watch Arctic Sea Ice Melt
One of the most striking changes that has taken place in the Arctic since the start of satellite monitoring in 1979 is the rapid decline of the perennial sea ice cover. This ice is the sea ice that survives the summer melt season, and is typically the thickest part of the sea ice cover, sometimes spanning several years. Sea ice extent has declined as the globe has warmed, but the ice cover has thinned as well. Thinner sea ice melts...
Mount Everest: Broken Records and Climate Change
Mount Everest has been in the news quite a bit lately and for good reasons: Jordan Romero, a 13-year-old boy, became the youngest person ever to climb to the summit. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, 50-year-old Apa Sherpa (also known as the Super Sherpa) broke his own record and has climbed Everest the most number of times (20 thus far). According to the Super Sherpa, Climate Change is having a notable impact on Mount Everest—to the point of making it...
New research shows herbicide causes sterilization and sex change in frogs
Atrazine, a common weed killer in much of the world, has been shown to turn male frogs into fully functioning, egg-laying females, according to a recent study. Illegal in the European Union since 2004 – but widely used in the U.S. and elsewhere – the agricultural herbicide is what's known as an endocrine disruptor, meaning it interferes with hormone function – in this case in the reproductive systems of amphibians. According to an article in National Geographic, a study of 40 genetically...
