Two tons of CO2, that’s what we emit every year just by eating, Spanish study finds
Posted by Murielle in Climate & Change, Science & Technology, Sustainable living, 5 Nov 2010
According to a recent article in Science Daily every living person emits about two tons of carbon dioxide a year just from eating. The study considers the eating process from the time food is produced to when the human body has fully processed it. Doing so, the CO2 emissions from human eating account for 20% of total yearly carbon emissions, at least in Spain.
The study, by the Spanish Universidad de Ameria, also confirms for the first time that human waste contributes to water pollution, primarily with nitrogen and phosphorus.

Does summer time reduce energy consumption?
Since 2007, daylight saving time (DST) in the United States starts nearly 3 weeks earlier than in previous years. It now begins on the second Sunday of March, while Europe begins European Summer Time (EST) on the last Sunday of March. But why do we do 'spring forward' and does it have any real benefits, such as saving energy? Below are two video reports from msnbc.com that offer differing opinions on the subject. According to the United States Department of Energy, daylight saving...
MW Horns REV 2: Now the World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm
Another one for the record books – just 30 kilometers west off the Danish mainland stands the MW Horns REV 2 Wind Farm, and at present, the largest wind energy farm in the world. It consists of 91 turbines and can generate 800 Gwh of electricity per year (the Horse Hollow Wind Center in Texas, previously the largest, generates 735 Ghw). It was built by DONG Energy, a leading wind energy firm that supposedly produces about half of the world’s...
Trash in orbit: Space debris is a growing concern
Space is not the sterile expanse of nothingness we might picture it to be. In fact, the space around Earth, much like the Earth itself, is littered with our junk. NASA estimates that there are some 18,000 pieces of space trash, each 10cm wide or larger, orbiting the Earth. Honestly, to me that doesn’t sound like that much, but there are a lot more smaller bits of space debris and the amount is ever-increasing. Ad that to the face that its...
Coral Reefs Save Us Billions, But Not For Long
Did you know that coral reefs can save us at least $172 billion per year? No? Well, did you know that through climate change, political inertia and ecosystem destruction, we are actually losing that money? That’s right, coral reefs are on the brink of collapse, and because we are quite responsible for their death, we are losing economically, as well. Pavan Sukhdev, an ecological economist from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre of UNEP in Cambridge, stated that "The entire ecosystem is...

Shedding Some More Light On Green Design
There is something that we use everyday. We use it to see. We use it to work. Some even use it to keep the darkness at bay. What I am talking about is light and that is what the designs in this article are all about. 97% Soap Lamp This ingenious design was created by D-Vision. What makes it so ingenious? Well, as the name says, the lamp is made almost entirely out of soap. During the molding process of the soap,...
Black gold in Tinseltown: The surprising tale of Los Angeles’ oil fields
There are oil fields in Beverly Hills. In West Hollywood too, right under the famous Farmers Market. Despite L.A.'s fame for being a city driven by film and entertainment, it began principally as an oil town. From the late 19th century and into the present day, the Los Angeles metropolitan area, home to the third largest oil field in the contiguous United States, has had a flourishing oil industry. The enclave of Signal Hill, within the city of Long Beach,...
New report exposes animal cruelty in Chinese circuses
Sticking your fist or head into the mouth of a declawed, de-toothed lion or tiger isn’t very impressive. In Chinese zoos, animal parks and circuses the abuse of animals is widespread. Bears, monkeys, elephants, wolves and big cats are among the animals who are routinely beaten into submission and forced to do absurd tricks for the entertainment of ignorant crowds. There are no animal protection laws in China to prohibit such behavior. The Hong Kong-based animal welfare group Animals Asia visited 13 zoos...
Penguins land on Brazil’s beaches
Stranded Magellanic Penguins occasionally wash up on the beaches of Brazil or are found at sea by local fishermen. According to the president of the Niteroi Zoo near Rio de Janeiro, the zoo has been receiving stray penguins since 1999, at first only around two or three per year. But the numbers soon climbed: to around 100 penguins in 2004 and nearly 700 in 2008. Magellanic Penguins commonly migrate north from Antarctica and Patagonia in search of fish, but for unknown reasons...
EVs in the UK: Fully electric cars on Britain’s roads!
About a month ago I was on the steamy, summery streets of London when I spotted a dreadlocked bohemian fellow with a little dog sitting in a car that wasn’t much bigger than a breadbox. The vehicle was squeezed into a parking space, which I think is normally reserved for skateboards and mopeds used for delivering pizza. Needless to say I was immediately stricken with puppy love – not for the doggy or the guy that looked like an extra...

I totally agree. A big part of the climate change and environmental issues would vanish by magic if we would change our habits and ways of life and be happy with less. The drive to consume remains one of my biggest concerns, as I’m convinced it’s the starting point of the majority of global, ecological and other issues we are facing.
We should be more concious about what and how much we eat. We consume so much it’s unbelievable; like the sources of food and water were endless.
Althought I am vegetarian myself (going vegan), I do not expect everyone to give up on meat, eggs and dairy.
Everyone can make a little difference at home, though. Just eat, people, choose your food wisely and EAT, don’t GUZZLE.
