eBay’s Green Instant Sale: recycling just got easier!
Posted by Murielle in Recycling, Sustainable living, 25 Oct 2010
I don’t know about you, but I like eBay. Like most I suppose, I’m not so fond of all the tiny hidden costs for every tiny little feature the site offers, but then again every business needs to be sustainable. Apart from that, I love the recycling philosophy that lies at the base of this business concept. And now, with the Green Instant Sale launched last week, eBay just became even more eco-friendly (so I’ll forget about the tiny hidden costs just for now).
Imagine you have a more or less recent gadget you want to get rid of but you don’t want to go through the whole eBay process to sell it online. Well, just by answering a couple of easy questions about your item, eBay gives you an instant offer, as well as a free shipping label to get the product send out free of charge! The best part is, even if your gadgets are not worth anything anymore or if they are not part of the gadgets that can be traded in for some money, you can still ship them to eBay for free and they will take care of the recycling part. Pretty cool if you ask me!

Air travel and climate change – is it possible to fly Green?
We already know that airplanes emit a lot of CO2. But how much of an environmental impact does flying have when compared to other modes of transport? What about offsetting the carbon footprint of flying by participating in ecotourism or running planes on biodiesel? Besides CO2, airplanes emit water vapor, nitrous oxides, sulfate, and soot. Since this takes place much higher in the atmosphere than emissions that come from other sources, their effects are more harmful. Additionally, the Intergovernmental Panel on...
Europe not despairing: Cancun is step forward towards a worldwide climate treaty – with or without the U.S.
European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard spoke during the opening day of the COP16 Climate talks in Cancun, Mexico yesterday. According to her the Cancun conference could be an important step towards a worldwide climate treaty, even if other nations like the U.S. are still not ready to play ball. It is very clear that the legally-binding deal that the EU was ready for last year and that we are still ready for will, unfortunately, not be the outcome of...
Whaling to Continue in Japan, Despite Environmental Activists’ Efforts
Hundreds of whales are killed per year, using cruel methods like explosive harpoons; and a number of the whales are also listed as Endangered, but apparently this is not enough to stop the horrendous efforts of the Japanese whaling industry. Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada met with Stephen Smith, his Australian counterpart, in an attempt to encourage Australia to help prevent violent attacks by activists against Japanese whalers. A Japanese foreign ministry official said that “our minister did not clearly state...
Journey: The only wild wolf in California
Last month I mentioned a ‘celebrity wolf’, who has been making a solo journey of hundreds of miles (over 1,000 km) throughout the American State of Oregon – the great state in which I was born if anyone cares… didn’t think so. Anyway, the lone Gray Wolf, until now known by the clinical moniker OR-7, has made his way – like so many disillusioned loners in search of stardom – into California. He’s the only wild wolf known to set foot...
Globama: Help Convince the White House to Go Solar!
Even though they can’t seem to get a climate bill finished for the life of them, the US government has a chance to go green—for free! Sungevity is making quite a nice offer to President Obama: a rooftop solar panel system for the White House, for free. The deal would include a 17.85 kW system with 102 panels, installation and warranty. All of that won’t cost anyone—including us poor taxpayers—a single penny. The only costs that would come with it would...
Follow Your Dog on Twitter with Puppy Tweets!
Do you remember the Friend A Gorilla program that was started last year? No? Well, it allowed people to friend and follow the every day lives of mountain gorillas via Twitter. Now, toy giant Mattel is taking up the reigns, except their latest project is going straight to the dogs. Mattel is planning to release Puppy Tweets—a plastic collar tag equipped with sound and motion sensors that can connect to your computer through wireless technology. Why, exactly, are they doing this? Well,...
Breaking: Landslides bury 60, kill 5 in Indonesia
Several days of heavy rain in parts of Java – Indonesia's main island – have resulted in deadly landslides killing 5 people, with at least 60 remaining buried under mud. Thousands of Indonesians have been made homeless due to recent flooding on Java. The latest landslide happened on a tea plantation in a mountainous village in the Ciwidey district, near West Java's capital city Bandung. According to the AFP the landslide occurred at 8 am local time. The village – named...
The 2010 Environmental Performance Index has been Released!
Yale has released this year’s Environmental Performance Index (EPI). If you’re unfamiliar with the EPI, it ranks 163 countries on 25 indicators across 10 categories, such as Climate Change and CO2 Emissions, Water and Sanitation, and Forestry and Forest Cover. These specific indicators help to determine how close each country is to establishing environmental policies. Here is the top 20 list, including their EPI score: 1. Iceland – 93.5 2. Switzerland – 89.1 3. Costa Rica – 86.4 4. Sweden – 86.0 5. Norway – 81.1 6. Mauritius – 80.6 7. France – 78.2 8. Austria – 78.1 9. Cuba...
‘England’s national author’ takes on the topic of climate change
Ian McEwan’s forthcoming novel, entitled Solar, is about a physicist working on solutions to environmental problems – specifically artificial photosynthesis – who gets caught up in a media controversy due to an unfortunate slip of the tongue. The story itself, according to an interview with McEwan by the Eastern Daily Press from August 3rd, is less about climate change and more about a character who finds himself in a crisis brought about by chance, against the backdrop of climate change...
Measuring climate change by speed: Temperature velocity
The Guardian reports that a new study measures climate change in terms of speed. The results show that climate change progresses at an average global velocity of a quarter of a mile (or 0.4 km) per year. Species that can tolerate only a narrow range of temperatures will need to move as quickly if they are to survive. Wildlife in lowland tropics, mangroves and desert areas are at greater risk than species in mountainous areas, the study suggests. –Guardian The study – conducted...

It is great when these big corporations step up and do good things like this. They are setting a good example nationally. Thanks Ebay!
Computer Recycling Minneapolis
It’s great that eBay is jumping on the bandwagon but don’t forget about the firms have been doing this for 5 – 10 years. Companies like http://www.SellYourCell.com have been doing this for some time and we offer great prices for used cell phones. Hopefully getting a big player like eBay involved will raise awareness since only 10% of people (according to the EPA) recycle/resell their old cell phones! Last month at SellYourCell.com we paid anywhere from $0 (recycle) to $245 (recent 32 GB iPhone) for cell phones with an average of $60. So please don’t throw away (or file away) that used cell phone!
