2,000 attend banned concert for Russian forest preservation
Environmental activists have been fighting to save Russia’s Khimki forest from plans to build a federal highway through it. On Sunday a rock concert in protest of the highway plans was held in Moscow, attracting some 2,000 people. Police prevented sound equipment from entering the concert area, but well-known Russian rock singer and political critic Yuri Shevchuk performed songs without amplification. From an AFP article: While the demonstration on Pushkin Square against the construction of the road had been sanctioned by the Moscow...
Breaking: Volcano in Iceland grounds thousands of European and transatlantic flights
Nearly all flights in UK airspace are grounded until Saturday at 01:00 since eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano on Iceland yesterday began sending vast amounts of ash into skies across Scandinavia and the British Isles. Some 17,000 flights are likely to be cancelled across Europe today. According to a report from BBC News, 'airspace of the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Czech Republic and Poland is restricted as completely as in the UK', with some restrictions in parts of Germany and northern...
Clash of Conservation Species: Stranded Polar Bears Feed on Revived Barnacle Geese
The battle between polar bears and barnacle geese hearkens a dismal new era for fauna worldwide, who are forced by climate change to make unfortunate adjustments Nothing jerks the animal lover's tears more than images of emaciated polar bears struggling in melting glacial water as global warming alters their icy habitat. Higher temperatures push these icons further from the seals they are accustomed to feeding on, so they have begun to seek their sustenance elsewhere. To the horror of the Wild...
Artificial Trees and Shiny Green Slime: New Geo-Engineering Report Offers Clever New Methods for Fighting Climate Change
My dad always said that our fake metal Christmas tree was better than the neighbors’ real ones. After all, it was reusable and wasn’t going to catch fire and burn the house down. The Institute of Mechanical Engineers is saying something similar. OK, not exactly, but they have come up with some “cool” – if novel – ideas to combat global warming: Artificial trees that collect CO₂ from the atmosphere – a bit like real trees, but thousands of times more...
Battery-Operated Electric Fish Come With a Dimmer Switch Feature
Sounds like a strange toy or home knick-knack, doesn’t it? Actually, this does apply to real fish, including eels and sharks. Scientists have discovered that the fish that are able to generate electric fields for purposes like fighting, navigating or mating, have a battery-like organ in their tails. Within this organ, a dimmer switch of sorts has been detected, as part of cells called electrolytes. The switch comes in the form of sodium channels. The fish uses these channels by inserting...
Southern White Rhinos Become Latest Target of Kenyan Poachers
In Africa, even private lands are no longer safe for endangered species. A Southern White Rhinoceros was killed by a group of poachers in a privately owned ranch located in central Kenya. The Kenya Wildlife Service sent out rangers to track the suspected poachers and buyers on Sunday; both were caught with two rhino horns weighing more than 16 pounds (7 kg) and $8,500 (647,000 Kenyan shillings) in cash, which is believed to be part of the money given to the...
Tree-hugging hippies and bloodthirsty killers – environmentalism makes strange bedfellows
You wouldn’t expect Greens, who often refuse to eat animals, to have much in common with hunters, who enjoy shooting and eating them. But shared perspectives on factory farming, personal responsibility and an affinity for nature are providing much needed common ground in order to bring about important political and societal change concerning environmental issues. Funny how looming disasters have a way of bringing some people together. The ecology movements around the world have diverse origins in terms of politics, philosophy...
Endangered Species of the Week: Ethiopian wolf
Species: Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting fact: The Ethiopian wolf is the only species of wolf in Africa. Similar to a coyote in appearance, the Ethiopian wolf is a long-legged species with a long, pointed muzzle. It lives in the mountains of Ethiopia where it forms close-knit territorial packs numbering between 3 and 13 adults. Individual pack members tend to forage alone, hunting for small mammals such as the big-headed mole rat. They skilfully stalk their prey before pouncing or digging...
High School Students Develop Artificial Tree
Two junior high school students from Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science has garnered attention for their designs of an artificial “tree” – a creation made from metal which absorbs carbon dioxide. The first working model of these "artificial tree towers" should be done by June of 2010. This technology is by no means new, but the teens hope that making their own artificial tree, they could pave the way for small-scale consumer efforts in the future. Read the full...
Video: The most polluted river in the world?
The Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia is one of the most toxic waterways in the world. The river is choked with industrial pollutants, garbage and sewage – yet some 30 million people depend on its waters. Villagers who live near the Citarum have no choice but to use the toxic river water for bathing and drinking. Though they boil it to kill bacteria before drinking, poisonous heavy metals and chemicals remain. Scavenging for trash and recyclables has replaced the...
