Guerilla gardeners and childless by choice: Meet the ‘extreme greens’
Posted by Graham_Land in Videos & Documentaries, Weird Stuff, 5 Sep 2010
From the sublime to the ridiculous, but mostly somewhere in between, France24 reports on ‘extreme greens’, i.e. those who go that extra mile for the environment.
Sometimes its silly, like throwing seed bombs so that illegal vegetation grows in Europe’s concrete-covered cities, at other times it’s couples making a serious lifetime commitment to not have children – but it’s all for the sake of the planet.
Check out the following video report from France24:

Top 5 Tips for Creating a Healthy, Eco-Friendly Diet
People today are absolutely obsessed with green and healthy eating. And it doesn’t stop there. Manufacturers, stores and labels are all about the healthy eating (supposedly). You’ll see foods listed as any of the following: organic, fair trade, low cholesterol, no cholesterol, 0 trans fat, reduced fat, low fat, no fat, local, seasonal, low sugar, no sugar, whole grain, and so on and so forth. How do you know which is the best option? What would make up the perfect...
Environment Art: Painting the Town Green!
Green is the new color of controversy. Love it hate it, you cannot ignore it. Green is all about being pro-environment, as well as the money and greed that stands in the way of all things pro-environment and green is also the new trend in the art scene. Well, it’s not really that new because “greening” of art actually started in the 1960s, when artists began to feel that the new and modern art of the time was not in harmony...
Winter Activities That are Green and Family Friendly
This past holiday season, electronics sold like mad (as usual). My nephews were amongst those who received a laptop, Wii, or Xbox. Needless to say, they are quite addicted to playing video games and watching TV. Like other kids in their class (and even in the neighborhood), you don’t see them play outside as much as they used to. While there is nothing wrong in modern forms of entertainment, it should not take over their lives, especially when that excessive...
2 Borneo Elephant Calves Found Abandoned, but Why?
There are strange things at work among the Borneo Elephant population as of late. Two female calves were found abandoned in Borneo recently. One was a 2-year-old stuck in a plantation moat and the other was a 6-month-old wandering in another plantation located in Malaysia’s eastern Sabah state. Both calves were starving. The shock of the matter is nothing like this has ever happened before—there is no known case of those elephant mothers simply abandoning their young. Laurentius Ambu, director of the...
3DReid Creates Rotatable Learning Space
Have you ever been in an amusement park funhouse? If you have, then you probably had the joy of experiencing the hall of mirrors, moving floors and rotating rooms. Now, imagine if someone took that rotating room and turned it into a sustainable, outdoor learning center. Can’t picture it? Don’t worry, it’s already being designed. 3DReid architects are collaborating with Blue Forest to create the first ever rotating learning space. Dubbed “rotatED”, the structure is capable of being turned on any...
Good News for US Wetlands: 75,000 More Acres Added to Conservation Program
Last week, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) announced plans to add 75,000 more acres to their Wetlands Reserve Program. The acres are located throughout 22 states (mostly in the south and Midwest) and Puerto Rico. Wetlands are an important habitat to many species and also rather vital to our own well-being. They filter contaminants from the water, prevent flooding and soil erosion, and play other key roles that benefit the environment. On top of the added protection, the USDA...
Typhoon survivors in Philippines still in need of help
Thousands of surviving victims of Typhoon Ketsana are still in desperate circumstances, half a year since the storm struck the Philippines, causing floods, landslides, death and destruction. Displaced villagers wait in temporary basic shelters for some solution. But for the government of the Philippines, the survivors are not enough of a priority. Five months after Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines, some evacuation centres are starting to close but thousands of people are still without homes. –Al Jazeera English Watch this Al Jazeera English video...
New Fault Line Created by New Zealand’s 7.1 Earthquake
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand on Saturday. The quake was centered near Christchurch, one of the largest cities on the island nation. At least 500 buildings were damaged or destroyed, roads were cracked, and surprisingly only 2 serious injuries were reported. Oh, and there’s one other thing. It’s possible the earthquake created a new fault line. Geology professor of Canterbury University, Mark Quiqley, explained: “One side of the earth has lurched to the right … up to 11 feet (3.5 m)...
Video: ‘Kung Fu Bear’ wows spectators at Japan zoo
An extremely bored, but talented bear has taught itself ‘kung fu’ at its home at the Asa Zoo in Hiroshima, Japan. The Asian black bear, named Claude, was filmed twirling a 5ft (1.5m) stick by a Canadian tourist, who later uploaded the footage to YouTube. The original video has received over 2.5 million views so far. Claude the ‘Kung Fu Bear’ really does look like he’s doing kung fu, at one point even tossing the spinning stick into the air and...
Solutions for CO2 from freight?
photo: Bundesautobahn (Flickr CC) The global shipping industry produces 3 billion metric tons of carbon emissions every year. That's as much CO2 as the combined output of Japan, Canada, Mexico and Germany. Greenhouse gas emissions from freight are a serious problem, but there are examples of alternative technology. One that is probably more familiar to most of us is the use of overhead electric cables, like the ones used to power tram lines or trolleybuses. Freight trucks could be powered in...
