In a UN-sponsored event designed to popularize electric vehicles, the Zero Race solar car rally began on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.
Participating in the race are teams from South Korea, Australia, Switzerland and Germany. They will attempt to travel around the world in 80 days, through 16 countries.
Zero Race organizer Louis Palmer has already driven around the world in his ‘Solar Taxi’, through 38 countries during 18 months.
From a CNET News article:

Sugar Sugar: Good Biofuel from Brazil?
When I visited Brazil several times during the latter half of the 1990s I noticed that many of the petrol/gas stations sold something called álcool. When I asked my friends what this was, they explained that it is a fuel made in Brazil from sugar cane. I thought this was brilliant: growing gasoline from yummy plants that are produced right in your own backyard and free from any mess involving oil spills, Gulf Wars or foreign despotic tyrants. It was...
UN climate officials meet in Bali, Indonesia
On Friday the annual meeting of UN climate chiefs took place in Bali, Indonesia. Officials from over 130 countries met with the principal aim of establishing trust between China and developing countries on the one hand; and rich countries – especially the United States – on the other. Despite the call for harmony, Chinese foreign ministry official Guo Zaofeng said developed countries had not lived up to their past commitments to cut greenhouse gases, nor had they provided funds and technology...
Unilever tops UK corporate climate change index – with a little help from Greenpeace
In light of a recent survey naming UK companies as the worst among 300 of Europe’s largest corporations when it comes to their contribution to global warming, another survey has been released, this time focusing only on British firms. The new list, called the FTSE carbon strategy index, compares Britain’s 350 biggest companies in terms of their response to climate change. The idea is that those companies with the best carbon strategies will also be the most efficient and well run. From...
Chinese Airlines Refuse to Pay EU Carbon Fees
By Andrew Freedman At just five-days-old, the EU's plan to subject non-European airlines to greenhouse gas emissions fees continues to reverberate worldwide. A day after we noted that Delta Airlines has begun passing on some of the emissions fees to fliers, in the form of a $3 surcharge on tickets to or from Europe, comes a report in the Guardian newspaper that the four top Chinese airlines are refusing to pay. The new rule subjects airlines flying to or from Europe to...
Terraform Sculptures: What Happens When Nature and Art Combine
Some people say art imitates nature. Other people say nature imitates art. And then you have people like Robert Cannon, who combines art and nature in some truly spectacular ways. Cannon uses an interesting mix of concrete and mosses to create a variety of sculptures. These sculptures are perfect for a garden, home, office or hotel lobby, and many other places. Some of his more notable creations include: a large playable chess set, a gauntlet, a horse head, and a...
Greenpeace: Major brands linked to river pollution in China
Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas, Puma, Calvin Klein, Converse, Cortefiel, H&M and Lacoste are among the global megabrands named in a new Greenpeace report on hazardous river pollution by the garment industry in China. Since 1995 China has been the world’s largest exporter of textiles, attracting Western and Japanese brands to manufacture there due to cheap labor and lax regulations. Even when major international brands have self-imposed regulations on how their garments are produced, such rules are harder to monitor when outsourced...
At the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, the Green economic climate looks good
This month saw the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates host the World Future Energy Summit, an international forum attended by over 23,000 delegates from 130 countries around the globe. The Summit is billed as 'the world’s platform for sustainable future energy solutions' where policy makers, scientists, investors and industry representatives gather to discuss the future of energy, its demands, challenges, and how to meet these in a cleaner, more sustainable manner. Though the Summit itself lasted four...
Ecuadorian Indians Killed in Environmental Protest
Fighting to save the environment almost always guarantees that death will be involved somewhere; the question is: Whose? Amazon Indians were battling police on Wednesday, in a protest against laws they believed would encourage mining and oil drilling on their lands. Taking place on the Upano River in Ecuador’s southeastern Morona Santiago jungle province, this brutal encounter killed 1 Indian and 2 civilians; and left 9 other Indians and 40 police wounded. According to Ecuador’s Amazon Indian federation, CONFENAIE, the 2...
Environmental crisis: Veggies to the rescue!?
Is eating your greens going to save the earth? This could have been a ridiculous question about a decade ago. But now, it’s even got a serious answer! It is estimated that if more people switched to eating more vegetables, than it can probably reduce our carbon emission by up to 18%. Of course this isn’t going to cut it with die-hard carnivores, who will probably say you can take away their hamburgers when you pry it from their cold, dead...
Rising Global Temperatures Brings Increase of Supposed Cryptozoological Sightings
The natural world holds many secrets; some of which are anything but natural. For centuries, there have been sightings reported of strange creatures, such as Bigfoot, El Chupacabra, the Loch Ness Monster, and so forth. Many people have claimed to see these things. Some have claimed to capture the strange species on film, or sometimes even in cages. Despite all of the sightings and so-called evidence that’s been collected over the years, there is still no absolute proof whether any of...
