Is there is just too much revenue in big oil to stop dangerous deep sea drilling? The oil industry, like the massive investment banks behind the financial crisis of 2008, is considered by some to be ‘too big to fail’. Yet also like financial crashes, disasters are calculated by those in charge as risks worth taking. Sure, a tragedy on the scale of the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico wasn’t expected, but the industry and the government – and everybody – knew that spills happen. Also like the banks, the oil industry is largely self-regulating, so they…

Are there areas in your community that are obviously lacking in plants (or green space)? Do you sometimes wish you could add more of that missing green space to your surroundings? Would you like to get your community involved, too? Then check this out: The Common Studio has developed an awesome idea known as Greenaid-Seedbomb Vending Machines. The machines are old gumball machines that are fixed up for a new purpose: the giving of seedbombs. These seedbombs are made from a mixture of clay, compost, and seeds. All it requires of you is to put some pocket change into the…

Primatologist Ymke Warren has been murdered in her home in the upscale neighborhood of Limbe, Cameroon. The murder took place on Tuesday morning when an assailant, who had presumably been hiding in Warren’s attic, attacked her with a machete. Warren lived together with partner Aaron Nicholas, also a primatologist and director of a gorilla project in Cameroon, who returned home minutes after the attack. Nicholas took Warren to the hospital, but her injuries were too severe. The couple were working on the Takamanda-Mone Landscape Project, run by the American Wildlife Conservation Society. They were studying Cross River gorillas, one of…

An independent report commissioned by the UK’s Conservative Party – when they were in opposition – has found that Britain needs a green investment bank in order to meet its emissions goals for 2020. The report, entitled ‘Unlocking investment to deliver Britain’s low carbon future’ discusses low carbon investment, issuing ‘green bonds’, tax incentives to help clean energy industries and levies on consumer fuel bills. From a Reuters Africa report: The scale of the investment required to meet UK climate change and renewable energy targets is unprecedented. –Green Investment Bank Commission report The report also states that the bank should…

Tackling climate change through forest restoration is the theme at this year’s Commonwealth Forestry Conference, currently taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland. 40 countries are represented at the conference, all from the vestiges of the once great British Empire, upon which the sun used to never set. The Prince of Wales has even addressed the conference – albeit by video – blaming agribusiness for ‘alarming’ deforestation rates. According to a report in The Scotsman, the secretary general of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma, referred to deforestation as ‘environmental vandalism’ and stressed that the time to act was now. He is quoted in…

It seems that whenever there is a major (or at least rather anticipated) conference or meeting that is supposed to solve some ongoing environmental issue, it always fails. Either the people at the meeting can’t agree on anything and it’s all called off, or they scrap up some last minute deal that really amounts to nothing, or the decision is postponed for 6 month to a year (or longer). The latest IWC whaling conference in Morocco is no different. Nothing was resolved at the meeting and it turned into a rather ridiculous set of negotiations and trade offs. The main…
