Greek dolphin park sparks controversy
Posted by Graham_Land in Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, 31 Jul 2010
Dolphins are a common sight in the calm, warm waters of the Greek Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. There they can be observed living free in their natural habitat.
And so it may seem strange that a dolphinarium – an aquatic animal park featuring dolphins – exists in Greece. Animal welfare activists believe so and are protesting a dolphin park at the Attica Zoo in Athens, which they believe to be cruel. The dolphinarium’s operators disagree, claiming the park has educational as well entertainment benefits.

Greek dolphin park prompts animal welfare row
From an article on di-ve.com:
Behind these business ventures using animals as main attractions there is always a cruel reality which is often kept hidden from the public. Animals are not to be used for our entertainment – the cruelty involved in capturing, transporting and confining these animals in a pool is never dealt with during a show – so the public needs to be informed on what really goes on.

Nearly all flights in UK airspace are grounded until Saturday at 01:00 since eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano on Iceland yesterday began sending vast amounts of ash into skies across Scandinavia and the British Isles. Some 17,000 flights are likely to be cancelled across Europe today. Animal suicide – are they ‘just like us’?
In The Cove, the Oscar winning documentary on Japanese dolphin slaughter, activist and former dolphin trainer Richard O'Barry claims that he witnessed one of his dolphins commit suicide by self-suffocation. This event was a major turning point in O'Barry's life and spurred his transformation from someone who kept dolphins into someone who rescues them. The idea of animals voluntarily killing themselves is a long-debated subject, as an article in Time magazine explores: The Romans saw animal suicide as both natural and noble;...
Imagine a Plastic That can Absorb CO2 and is BPA-Free
There are 3 basic things that are generally considered bad in the green world: plastics, BPA in plastics, and excessive CO2 emissions. Imagine if some of these things could be combined and used for the greater good. It seems unlikely, right? Well, guess what? Scientists are currently working on this very thing and they are making progress. Researchers at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore have identified classes of organic chemicals that are capable of capturing CO2 from the...
They ran naked for the sake of the environment!
Several dozen men ran naked around the University of Manila. They wanted to draw attention to the need for greater environmental protection. Bare runs have become a tradition at this Filipino University. Every year a group of students meet to fight in defense of the environment. The tradition started over 40 years ago. Then, the students were running around in protest against President Ferdinand Marcos. This year, runners fought for purification of the local rivers. Although the message was not clear for...
Rachel Maddow on how big corporations disguise themselves as ‘nonprofit’ organizations and social activists
Ever wonder why there is such confusion – especially in America – regarding what is healthy, what is safe, what is environmentally friendly… whether global warming and climate change are even real? Well a lot of it is comes down to PR, political lobbying and money. Whoever has the most cash has the loudest voice: in terms of publicity and unfortunately, political power. Rick Berman, a PR lobbyist who is paid to campaign under the mask of social activism by setting...

Bloody animal rights activists protest against fur
Yesterday, as part of the World Day Against the Use of Fur actions, AnimaNaturalis activists paraded wearing fur and with fake blood dripping down their chins to protest against the use of animal furs and leather for clothing. The protest was held outside a prestigious shopping center in Mexico City, not shy of shops selling fur. Winter is the heyday for the fur industry. Every year this industry generated massive profits from the death of millions of furry animals like seals,...
