Breaking News: Pakistan Faces Worst Flood in Decades; Over 800 Dead
Posted by Arkisaeo in Climate & Change, Health, Nature, 31 Jul 2010
Earlier this week, Information Minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, stated:
“According to initial reports received from all districts, 408 people have so far been killed [since Wednesday]” … “We fear the death toll will rise once the water recedes. We are facing the worst disaster in the history of our province.”
Unfortunately, the death toll has climbed since then and is expected to keep rising.
Bridges, roads, and railways were destroyed by the floods; plus homes, hotels and schools also received a considerable amount of damage. The worst hit places include Charsadda, Swat, and Nowshera, which is already halfway underwater. At least 50 tons of rations have been airlifted to help those affected thus far.

Cocoa genetic code cracked – Bittersweet?
Multinational chocolate giant Mars, working with the US Department of Agriculture and IBM, have sequenced the genome of the cocoa tree. Rather than patenting the genome, it’s been released into the public domain. Unlocking the genetic secrets of chocolate, scientists say, could revolutionize cocoa farming in the developing world, especially in West African nations. Cocoa production is severely hampered by pests and fungal diseases, which regularly cause hundreds of millions of euros in losses in West African chocolate producing nations like Ghana...
Conservation, Native rights and sustainable energy: Cape Wind suffers another ‘blow’
What would be the United States' first offshore wind farm project – dubbed Cape Wind – may be in jeopardy due to an announcement by the National Park Service last week. The NPS stated that the site of the proposed wind farm, in Massachusetts’ Nantucket Sound, should be eligible for protection by being included in the National Register of Historic Places. Two Native American tribes, the Aquinnah and the Mashpee Wampanoag, are opposed to the project due to traditional and...
Growing consumption and population = ‘ecological debt’
Despite growing environmental awareness and energy efficiency measures, the developed world consumes more than ever. At the same time people in China and much of the developing world are adopting more energy intensive lifestyles. So more cars and meat consumption in China, etc., combined a growing obsession for the latest consumable goods – like phones, cars and computers – in rich nations, means the world will enter into ecological debt one month earlier this year. According to the New Economics Foundation...
UK govt. cutbacks hit Britain’s electric car scheme
The UK’s new Conservative lead coalition government is doing more or less what Tory governments are expected to do: make public spending cuts. But this is the ‘new’ Tory leadership, softened by cuddly Liberal Democrat partners and promises to be Britain’s greenest government yet, albeit a belt-tightening one in a time of economic crisis and ‘necessary’ fiscal austerity. Well, here is an example of this compromise vis-à-vis Britain’s electric car scheme, first announced in March by the previous Labour government. Two articles...
Want to Stop Climate Change? Go Get Arrested.
In an effort to put pressure on global leaders to pass a solid, well-founded global treaty at the upcoming COP-15, the Yes Men group is organizing 10,000 protesters, who are willing to get arrested for the cause. This event is going to be the largest civil disobedience act against climate change in history, and rightly so. Last week, the Yes Men passed out fake issues of the New York Post strewn with pro-climate action stories and launched Survivaballs. It is uncertain...
The Stupid Show is pretty smart
Here's something good that came out of COP15: The Stupid Show I could spend hours watching these snippets and interviews from Franny Armstrong and company. They are both alternately and simultaneously interesting, depressing, amusing and sometimes even inspiring. Armstrong is the filmmaker responsible for the eco-documentary The Age of Stupid. During the climate change conference in Copenhagen last December she and her crew were on site talking to politicians, activists, journalists, celebrities and 'climate witnesses' – ordinary people who have already suffered...
RealClimate.Org: Get Your Climate Change Facts Straight
Global Warming antagonists, anti-greenies and conspiracy theorists are always looking for an excuse or a way out. They say Climate Change is not real. They say there is no proof or that the proof is all faked. With the recent hacking mayhem that occurred, they see it as their big opportunity to show the world that we’ve all been duped. A few vague e-mails without a shred of any proof of deception is their big weapon right now, and conveniently...
A mass slaughter of dogs is currently being prepared, an estimated 3 million are to be destroyed
Sri Lankan authorities have agreed to the elimination of 3 million stray dogs. The government has decided to cancel the decision prohibiting the capture and killing their dogs - said Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health of Sri Lanka. In this country, two thousand people are annually hospitalised because of bites inflicted by strays searching for food. According to authorities, the number of wandering dogs already exceeded 3 million, and has become a serious problem for public health. The killing of stray dogs ban came...
The environmental situation of the Tiber River
The circulation of groundwater in Rome is being threatened by great transformations in natural physiographic systems completely upset by great peripheral urban settlements. Rome is supplied by springs located several hundred km's from the city. Local sources contribute marginally to the supply, such as the Acqua Vergine Spring and some other mineral water springs. The groundwater quality is consistently damaged by extensive urban development, characterised by large new districts developed without respect to regulations (average dimension of thousands of inhabitants), and by...
One Unexpected Creature Discovered a Way to Cheat Death
When we think of immortality or eternal youth, many of us probably imagine things like gods, vampires, the Fountain of Youth, and even the Land of Faerie. Throughout history, there have been many legends and tales about creatures who cheated death or people who set out on a quest to find ever-lasting life. However, of all the stories and possibilities you might consider, I’ll bet none of you thought of the simple jellyfish. One jellyfish in particular has discovered the perfect...
