British gorilla specialist killed in Cameroon
Posted by Graham_Land in Conservation, 1 Jul 2010
Primatologist Ymke Warren has been murdered in her home in the upscale neighborhood of Limbe, Cameroon. The murder took place on Tuesday morning when an assailant, who had presumably been hiding in Warren’s attic, attacked her with a machete.
Warren lived together with partner Aaron Nicholas, also a primatologist and director of a gorilla project in Cameroon, who returned home minutes after the attack. Nicholas took Warren to the hospital, but her injuries were too severe.
The couple were working on the Takamanda-Mone Landscape Project, run by the American Wildlife Conservation Society. They were studying Cross River gorillas, one of west Africa’s most threatened primate populations.
–Telegraph
Ymke Warren ran the Dian Fossey Project – herself murdered in Rwanda in 1985 – after escaping the genocide in the central African country.
It is not as of yet known why Warren was killed.

Dutch Government Considers Placing Green Tax on Drivers
A lot of people may wish to believe that you can’t put a price on anti-green living. Well, guess what: if you live under the rule of the Dutch government, you may be sorely mistaken. The Dutch government is now working towards the possibility of a “green tax” in order to cut down on carbon emissions. This is particularly aimed at those who drive: for every mile you drive, you will be taxed. According to the transport ministry: “Each vehicle will be...
California Surfer Standup-Paddles for Charity, is Escorted by Minke Whale!
California surfer, Jodie Nelson, sure knows how to travel. On Sunday, she set out on a mission: to travel 40 miles from Santa Catalina Island to Dana Point via standup-paddle. Why? She wanted to inspire her best friend to keep fighting through her long struggle with breast cancer. She also hoped the 9 hour trip would raise awareness about breast cancer and also raise money for two cancer-related charities. Nelson is the first woman to make this particular journey and that...
Endangered Species of the Week: Giant otter
Species: Giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting Fact: The giant otter is also known as the ‘river wolf’. The giant otter is one of South America’s top carnivores, and is the largest of the otter species. The giant otter generally lives in family groups of three to ten individuals, composed of a monogamous, breeding pair and their offspring born during previous years. These groups rest, play, travel, fish and sleep together. When cubs are born, they are cared for in a...
Debate continues to rage in Spain after Catalonia’s bullfighting ban
The Catalan parliament recently voted to ban bullfighting, a decision scheduled to go into effect in 2012. At the first bullfighting event in Barcelona since the ban, the industry and its supporters were out in full force to protest the ban and assert their ‘right’ to tease, abuse and stab young bulls to death for the amusement of the crowd. A manifesto by the group La Mesa del Toro was to be read out at all bullfighting events in Spain, France...
Europe’s pollution and emissions from transportation go up
An EU study has shown that despite efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from transportation within Europe, both have actually increased over the ten year period of 1997-2007. The report, from the European Environment Agency (EEA), gauges pollution and emissions levels from the transport sector in 32 European countries. While high emitters like passenger air travel, road and air freight grew, the use of rail and inland waterways declined. Reuters reports: European passenger airlines are increasing their traffic by about 48...
Don’t forget: Vanishing honeybees
We depend on honeybees to pollinate some 70 crops. Due to a phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), honeybees, mainly in North America, are dying off at a shocking rate – 30% every year since 2006. In the US, bee die-offs have qualified some beekeepers for disaster relief from the Department of Agriculture. Though the exact cause, or causes, of CCD are murky – it has been attributed to parasites and satellite communication – the most obvious culprits are pesticides, specifically...
Q: It is said that organic cosmetics are safer for consumers and the environment. What makes them better?
A: Organic cosmetics are made from natural, plant-based ingredients from certified organic plantations. If they aren’t vegan, they still don’t contain any substances that come from dead animals, but ingredients such as honey and milk protein may be used in their composition. The amount of harsh substances like parabens and SLS that non-organic cosmetics often contain, is approved as safe, but things aren’t that simple. If you use many cosmetics one after the other, like a cleansing gel, mask, toner and then...
Call on lifting ban to prevent bed bugs
Bed bugs are among the most widely hated parasites. These critters inhabit sofas, mattresses and sheets and feed on human blood. Now that bed bug infestation in hotels, dormitories and other areas are becoming widespread, many people are calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to lift a ban on pesticides that could fight these parasites. Other methods such as heating, freezing and steaming the bugs out of bedrooms and other treatments are very expensive. Ohio's Department of Agriculture is seeking an...
US scientist destroys prominent UK climate ‘skeptic’
Christopher Monckton, aka Third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, is a loud critical voice in the highly politicized publicity war against mainstream climate science in the UK. A former journalist who worked in Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government during the 1980s, Monckton also favored compulsory AIDS testing for the entire population and lifetime quarantine for those with the disease. He later gave up that crackpot cause and took up climate science denial during the last decade, joining the likes of other right wing...
Naples garbage war heats up
The ongoing web of problems between rubbish and corruption has turned Italy’s once rustic region of Campania into an area known for the mafia and toxic waste. Naples, the capital of Campania, is once again the center of protests, in which 2,000 locals rioted, threw stones and burned garbage trucks early Friday and during the following three nights. The protesters are against their city being used as a giant dump for the north of Italy – including further plans to build...
