Still no justice for Bhopal victims, campaigners say
Posted by Graham_Land in Politics, Pollution, Videos & Documentaries, 27 Jun 2010
Survivors of the horrific chemical disaster that took place over 25 years ago in Bhopal, India are not satisfied with the recent actions of the Indian government regarding their case.
The poison gas leak at the Union Carbide pesticide plant is considered the worst industrial disaster in history, resulting in many thousands of deaths as well as serious lingering health conditions that continue to damage those affected to this day.
Activists and victims of the tragedy are unsatisfied with a recent Indian court ruling, which sentenced 7 Union Carbide employees to 2 years in prison. Nor are they content with a new government compensation and cleanup plan.
From a BBC News report:
We are not satisfied with the compensation, we are not satisfied with the rehabilitation [plan for victims] and we are not satisfied about the approach to corporate liability [in the new compensation package].
–Rachna Dhingra, Bhopal campaigner
Shortly after the accident, former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson fled to the US after making bail and has remained there since, avoiding continued extradition attempts by the Indian government.

War and the environment: The Garden of Eden recovers
Iraq’s Mesopotamian marshes, drained under the regime of Saddam Hussein during the early 1990s to punish a local uprising, are recovering nicely due to the efforts of Iraqi conservationists and local inhabitants. This former Garden of Eden is believed by some scholars to be the actual Garden of Eden mentioned in the Bible. You know, where Adam and Eve frolicked and had that nasty run-in with the snake. What was nothing but a wasteland nearly a mere 20 years ago is now...
Hollywood to the rescue: James Cameron offers help in Gulf oil spill crisis
First it was actor Kevin Costner and his oil separation machines, now it's Hollywood heavyweight James Cameron – director of Avatar, Titanic and the Terminator and Alien film series – who has offered to join in the quest for solutions to the Deepwater oil well leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Cameron, an avid submariner, owns a considerable amount of deep-sea equipment and has become a bit of an expert in deep-sea filming and technology by virtue of his work on...
Sea Shepherd Successfully Shuts Down Japanese Whaling for 3 Days Thus Far
Is Sea Shepherd finally successful in shutting down this year’s Japanese whaling campaign? Maybe. For 3 days now, the Japanese have been unable to kill a single whale. Sea Shepherd’s 2 remaining ships, Steve Irwin and Bob Barker, have been closely tailing the Nisshin Maru—Japan’s factory ship. They are currently on a northeastwardly pursuit and have enough fuel to last a month. According to their website: "Not a single whale has died since the Bob Barker intercepted the fleet at 0100 Hours on February...
Dateline NBC meets New York’s ‘ECO cops’
Meet New York State Police's Environmental Conservation Officers. For their 'Green is Universal' coverage, NBC's Dateline follows two green-clad cops who enforce environmental law on the streets of New York City. But these ECO Police are no new green trend – NBC's Chris Hansen reports that they've 'been around for over a century'. A police force that once concentrated on fish and game regulations now also tackles issues such as pollution and food sanitation in America's biggest and busiest city,...
Atlas Mugged: Research finds that the rich are prone to immorality
Rich people are more likely to steal, cheat, lie and cut you off in traffic, according to research conducted at the University of California Berkeley. Where to file this: in the ‘so obvious we didn’t need a study to confirm it’ category, or in the ‘wait a second, rich people don’t need to steal and cheat, it’s poor people who are pushed into this kind of behavior’ section? Bit of both, maybe? The study suggests that the rich don’t feel that they need...
Protecting the penguins: Falkland Islands attempt to shield native species from effects of climate change
The Falkland Islands' unique wildlife may be threatened by climate change. The native penguins are especially valuable to the Falkland's tourism industry and it is therefore a priority for the islands to protect and preserve them. These Falkland Island treasures are the same type of penguins who were 'filmed' flying for a famous BBC April Fools joke. Watch this Sky News report from the Falklands. Chrysler goes digital and saves 20,000 trees
The motor industry is trying hard to meet the environmental requirements of the eco-minded consumer. We were able to notice a shift of interest at the latest Frankfurt motor show where electric cars dominated the event. Now Chrysler follows the movement by replacing the traditional owners’ manual of its vehicles by DVD, customer-friendly guides. Starting with the 2010 model year production line, all paper manuals will be replaced by small booklets and accompanying DVD. Doing so, Chrysler states it will...
Environment Continues on Downward Spiral
The world has been through some drastic changes since the Kyoto agreement in 1997, and none of them have been for the better. Over a decade has passed and it seems the most people have been capable of is studying and talking, but not much doing. Yes, there have been conferences, protests, demonstrations and some off-the-wall actions by organizations and the like; but what of the politics and science? For all the research done and meetings held, look at the good...

Creating awareness among the people of nation has become the most necessary task these days. The movies are one of the best sources of creating awareness among people and have come out to be a really good source of delivering strong environmental...
Swiss solar airplane completes 26-hour flight
I recently wrote about lightweight manned electric airplanes making groundbreaking 2 and 3-hour flights. As impressive as this may sound, a Swiss solar-powered plane has just demolished these achievements by a ‘comfortable’ margin of 23 hours. On Thursday morning a former jet pilot in Switzerland’s air force successfully landed Solar Impulse, a four engine solar aircraft, near the Swiss capital of Bern. The landing followed an incredible 26-hour long flight; the longest and highest – at 8,700m or 28,543ft – ever...
