India to Launch 2 Satellites Exclusively for Monitoring Daily Environmental Changes
Posted by Arkisaeo in Climate & Change, Conservation, Nature, Science & Technology, Sustainable living, Wildlife & Flora, 27 Jun 2010
The first satellite, which will be launched in 2012, will monitor daily carbon emissions; while the second satellite will monitor India’s forest cover—also on a daily basis. Both satellites will be launched by the Indian Space Research Organization.
According to Ramesh:
“Currently, forest cover in the country can be known only after two years and the reduction of this period will help the government in taking steps immediately.”
In addition to the satellite launches, the government also identified 65 cities under the National Mission for Sustainable Habitat, with coastal cities given top priority. Ramesh said protecting these cities from increasing sea levels was a prime objective. He also added that the cities—which were chosen under the Jawaharlal Nehru Renewal Mission—will be given funds due to the steps they’ve taken to ensure green cover of the city.

The Search Continues for Arkansas Flood Victims
The search continues in Arkansas after a flood swept through a campground in the state and killed at least 18 people. So far, 15 of the 18 victims have been publicly identified. The death toll includes at least 6 children—3 of which were from Louisiana—plus 3 others from Louisiana and 6 from Texas. Only 1 of the identified was actually from Arkansas. Rescue workers have been scouring the campground for signs of life or death, though with all the debris it could...
Java’s Merapi volcano close to eruption
Last Friday, one of the worlds most dangerous volcanoes, showed an increase in activity with hundreds of seismic quakes and dozens of lava eruptions. This weekend, the Indonesian authorities, started the evacuation of 40000 people living around the Merapi volcano. The Merapi volcano is said to be one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes. Its last active burst dates from 2006, when 2 people died due to fume exposure. Before that, in 1994, 66 people died when the Java volcano erupted....
Drought in West Africa threatens mass starvation
Several West African nations are at ‘crisis point’ due to a severe drought in the region. Harvests in Niger and Chad have fallen by a third, while food prices have increased by the same proportion. Both countries have declared a state of emergency. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) some 10 million people are at risk of hunger in the West African part of the Sahel, an ecological and geographical zone that stretches across the African continent. 13.4 million...
EU: Fishermen to catch plastic bottles
There used to be jokes about going “condom fishing” in dirty city canals, but now an ambitious EU plan aims to encourage professional fishermen to haul recyclable plastics from Europe's suffering seas as part of their catch. This could mean a significant shift in the normally environmentally harmful behavior of commercial fishing. EU fisheries chief Maria Damanki unveiled bold plans to eliminate the practice of fishing boats throwing back unprofitable, yet edible, catch. Smaller, younger fish or less valuable species are...
Videos on sustainable development from Defra
Defra, the U.K.'s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, runs a number of campaigns and projects around themes of environmental responsibility sustainable development. Endangered Species of the Week: Saiga antelope
Species: Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) Status: Critically Endangered (CR) Interesting Fact: The large proboscis-like nose of the saiga antelope is thought to help with body temperature control. The strange looking saiga antelope has an extremely distinctive appearance, with an enlarged nose that hangs down over the mouth. This impressive nose is thought to warm and moisten inhaled air during the winter, and act as a filter against dust during the dry summer. Saiga antelope feed by grazing on various plants, and are usually...
German ‘E-Bikes’ promise green alternative to scooters
In Stuttgart, Germany, electric motorbike company ELMOTO manufactures zippy E-Bikes that are designed for getting around in cities, much like their combustible-engined cousins. E-Bikes are high-tech scooters, but some models physically resemble smallish dirt bikes. They are lightweight and run almost silently. I can only hope they catch on for this reason alone, as I live next to a busy road often used by teenagers on noisy mopeds. Alas, their high price tag at the moment – around €4,000 ($5,000) –...
Man Gets 30 Months In Prison For Stealing Peregrine Falcon Eggs
These peregrine falcons were spared from Dubai's rare breeds smuggling ring, but can it happen again? Unfortunately, for every "good guy" who works tirelessly to support wildlife conservation, who crawls through brambles and thickets to discover a missing frog for example, there is at least one "bad guy" who undermines those efforts. The battle between the light and the dark forces of conservation continues apace, as one Irish Zimbabwean tried to smuggle 14 peregrine falcon eggs out of the United Kingdom...
Stuck with a wasp nest: do we really need to be wasp-free?
Last week we discovered a wasp nest in one of the external wall structures of our house. We were amazed by the incredible amount and speed of wasps flying in and out. Honestly, you have to see it to believe it. So here we are, stuck with a wasp nest, ready to call the fire department to come and help us get wasp-free. Before placing the call we decided to research wasps a bit more. If we hadn’t noticed the wasp...
Bananas and carbon footprints: Pretty appealing
Since I eat a banana almost every day I admit I’ve dreaded cutting down or giving them up based on the fact that they are not a local food and therefore not environmentally right-on. I naturally assumed they were not energy efficient due to their having to be shipped from Costa Rica or some such far-off tropical place, but at the same time I didn’t really know. A new book by Mike Berners-Lee entitled ‘How Bad are Bananas?’ attempts to measure...
