Oil-covered dolphins have been spotted swimming in the Gulf of Mexico exhibiting both unusually agitated and ‘sluggish’ behavior. Both journalists and professional dolphin spotters have noticed dolphins ‘acting drunk’, some with their dorsal fins encrusted in reddish crude.

When we realized what we had discovered, we called Daryl Carpenter, owner of Reelscreamers, and asked him if anyone else had noticed the oiled dolphins or reported it. Carpenter said that news crews had taken video footage, but he did not know if any of the images had been broadcast. So far none of the images have surfaced, and wildlife officials, if they know about this situation, have been mum.

Harmful, toxic chemicals in the oil are poisonous to dolphins as they are to humans, who have experienced nausea, dizziness and confusion simply by breathing fumes coming from the oil leaking from the breached BP oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. The dolphins, since they live in the water, have no choice but to swim through it.

Here is a short video report from BBC News regarding the situation with these intelligent and sensitive animals, who are struggling to live through the BP oil spill tragedy.

    I’m not an expert on photoshop, but it looks fine to me.
    There are “3,500 drilling rigs and platforms, 79 of them deepwater wells” in the US and dolphins live pretty much all over the coasts, so getting a photo of some near a rig shouldn’t be that hard.

    If you note from the caption, it’s of a rig in Santa Barbara, California (the site of a large spill in 1969).

    LOOK AT THE PHOTO, IT LOOKS PHOTOSHOPPED… LIKE SOMONE TOOK A PICTURE OF AN OIL RIG AND PUT IT ON A PICTURE WITH DOLPHINS. NOT SAYING DOLPHINS ARE GETTING DEVASTATED BY THE OIL SPILL, JUST THE PHOTO LOOKS FAKE.

    Good point, lynnie. There are so many aspects to this tragedy that perhaps oily dolphins aren’t big news. On the other hand, BP – who still maintain the most power/knowledge about the situation – surely do not find it in their own interest to let the full extent of the disaster be known. The cleanup workers and Coast Guard probably don’t want journalists poking around either.

    sad thing is, the general public won’t find these sites unless they dig deep. Unbelieveable the news doesn’t give the full impact of this, just the barbie doll version.

    It’s getting biblical, Starman ;)

    …and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

    And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

    And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died;..
