Sea Shepherd recently freed 800 threatened bluefin tuna from the nets of fishing vessels operating in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya.

The crew of the Steve Irwin vessel threw rotten butter onto the crew of a Maltese ship after being rammed; then proceeded to examine the contents of their underwater cages. The Sea Shepherd activists then released the overstocked catch, which contained many juvenile tuna.

It is the opinion of Sea Shepherd that political efforts have failed and it is private citizens who must act to save the bluefin. Steve Irwin crew member Wietse van der Werf writes in a piece for the Guardian:

The situation is getting desperate for a fish that is set on a course towards extinction in the near future. In recent years, many attempts to give bluefin tuna added protection through the conventional political processes have failed. In this light, the willingness to directly intervene against illegal fishermen in this most lucrative type of fishing operations might be one of the last chances to get attention for the issue and get the species better protection to ensure its survival.

You don’t have to risk life and limb by battling fishermen in foreign waters either. You could take the path of Greta Scacchi and pose nude with a cod.

The actress has lent her voice to anti-overfishing campaigns and has a long history working with Greenpeace and for various environmental causes, according to an article entitled ‘Greta Scacchi revels in her happiest role yet: environmental campaigner‘ in Sunday’s Observer.
