Egypt Announces Plans to Go Solar
Posted by Arkisaeo in Climate Change, Green living, Politics, 19 Jun 2010
When it comes to Egypt, most news reports tend to be about the latest archaeological findings. This report is not about that.
This great desert nation will finally have its first solar energy plant by the end of the year. The plant will be one of only 4 plants with a 140-megawatt capacity in the entire world.
As with many other nations jumping on the green bandwagon, this effort is part of Egypt’s plan to reach their target goal of having 20% of their total energy needs come from renewable sources by the end of 2020. The announcement comes a week after the United Arab Emirates reported plans to build the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant.

New Study: 1/6 Of All Mediterranean Mammals Face Extinction
The latest “Red List of Threatened Species” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature reports that 1 out of 6 Mediterranean Mammals are in danger of being extinct. A total of 320 Mediterranean mammals (excluding dolphins and whales) were studied for the list. Not surprisingly, habitat loss and degradation were the top causes, brought about by “include expansion and intensification of agriculture, urbanization, infrastructure development, pollution and climate change.” One of the study’s co-authors, Helen Temple, called for awareness...

BlablaCar is a community-based travel service. Founded in 2006, the site now has over 1.5 million drivers and passengers and is growing by over 50,000 users every month. What makes the BlablaCar concept unique is its mix of travel site and social...
Danish climate report sees nation fossil fuel-free by 2050
A new Danish report states that the Scandinavian country could produce all of its energy without fossil fuels within 40 years. The report, by the government of Denmark’s climate commission, cites the rising cost of oil and gas coupled with the lowering prices of renewable energy. From an article in the Guardian: The report will also send a very clear and important signal to other countries that wind is a sustainable source of energy for future development. This is a great opportunity to...
Finland Announces Plans to Use More Renewable Energy
Finland announced plans to step up and meet EU requirements on cutting greenhouse gas emissions this week. The EU requirement is to raise the share of renewable energy to 38% of energy consumption by 2020. In order to meet this goal, Finland must raise renewable energy production by 38 terawatt hours. How do they plan to reach this goal? Well, on top of using their current nuclear power system, Finland also plans on adding wood-based and wind energy systems, plus...
London Futures: Art exhibit imagines what may lie ahead
Books like Stephen Baxter’s Flood, Saci Lloyd’s Carbon Diaries 2015 and 2017, Ronald Wright’s A Scientific Romance, and Maggie Gee’s The Flood and Ice Age have depicted a future London either in the violent throws of climate change or after such a radical change has already happened. These books are members of a growing cannon of science or speculative fiction about an often grim future that is difficult for most to conceive of: a vastly altered landscape, a flooded, tropical...
Will rechargeable batteries make South America the new Middle East?
Lithium-ion batteries are being touted by US President Barack Obama as the most efficient way to electrify motor vehicles. A mass shift from fossil fuel and conventional combustion engines towards battery-powered electric cars may also receive a boost due to the unfortunate recent events in the Gulf of Mexico. From an article on stockhouse.com: In 2009, alone, the U.S. federal government granted over US$25 billion in loans to automobile and battery makers. Such initiatives promise to help President Obama accomplish his well-publicized mandate...
‘Green’ products as toxic as their non-green equivalents
We’re all aware of the ongoing debate about “green” labels. Usually the discussion is centered on what kind of products can or should be labeled “natural”, “organic” or “green”. In that debate we discuss the major ingredients of a product, the percentage of those ingredients that must be contained in the product and what needs to be specified on the label. Sometimes we worry about how the products come to exist, like with oil derivatives, or other natural products. Caring...
Creature Feature: The American Burying Beetle
This week’s Creature Feature turns to a species class that many people are not exactly fond of—some people even fear them—but they deserve their turn in the spotlight all the same. The American Burying Beetle, or Giant Carrion Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus), is a critically endangered species and native to North America. They are between 25 and 45 mm in size (roughly 1 to 2 inches) and have a shiny, black body with orange-red markings. This creature is carnivorous and it’s food—and breeding...

The possibilities are huge for residential solar energy. With the rising cost of energy solar power will only become more attractive in the future.Solar power is important to the evolution of the society. It is important for countries, such as the United States, to move away from the dependency on foreign oil and to use energy resources that are readily available. No one can deny the sun isn’t a steady resource.
