Breaking News: Indonesia Hit by 2 Earthquakes; Some Dead, Many Wounded
Posted by Arkisaeo in Natural disasters, Wildlife & Flora, 16 Jun 2010
At least 2 earthquakes hit Indonesia today, killing at least 3 people and damaging hundreds of homes.
First, there was a 5.3 magnitude quake on Sulawesi island. Landslides nearly destroyed at least 50 buildings and killed at least one person at an elementary school.
A second—7.0 magnitude—quake struck off the coast of Papua province—nearly 1,200 miles (2,000 km) from the first quake—and was followed by a series of aftershocks, the strongest being a 6.4. Many people were hospitalized, one woman was killed, and a 5-month-old baby was crushed when his family’s house collapsed.
Search and rescue teams are at work and expect to find more bodies, as there have been reports of some houses being completely flattened. A tsunami warning was also issued but has already been lifted.
Updates will be posted as they happen.

Environmental news from Portugal: Lost in the shadow of Copenhagen
Portugal is not a country you often find taking up headlines in major international news sources. But the small Iberian nation has recently been home to two major events focusing on the subject of the environment, especially sustainable development. From November 20th - 22nd Portugal's capital city of Lisbon hosted Planet Earth Lisbon 2009, or PEL2009, a conference celebrating the end of the International Year of Planet Earth. A project by the Earth Sciences for Society, the International Year of...
US Flood Updates: 20th Arkansas Victim Found, Oklahoma City Flooded
They say things always happen in three’s. So far, we’ve had a flood tear through Arkansas and also one through Oklahoma. I can only imagine where the next one will be, but here are some updates on the first two: The Arkansas death toll rose to 20 flood victims as rescuers found the body of a young girl. Search teams were not sure if the girl was the same as one reported missing by her family, so they must wait until...
Off to college: How about becoming a green student?
Going green has become fashionable in recent years, but it’s more than just a fad: conservation and green initiatives are now integral parts of many college campuses. Even if your college campus doesn’t participate in green initiatives, there steps you can take as an individual that will translate to real impact. Don’t be a litterbug Seems simple, right? But the amount of trash the average American produces in just one day is staggering: more than four pounds of solid waste, ranging from...
Rare Ethiopian Animals are Making a Comeback
When we think of Ethiopia, our thoughts most likely turn to those television commercials that encourage the adoption or donation to a poor, starving child and their families. While starvation and poverty are certainly troubling things, there is another issue this African country has faced over the years. Located on the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is a home to many Threatened, Endangered, and Critically Endangered species. Over the years, these species have fallen in numbers, thanks to problems like: deforestation, civil...

Recycling bins with microchips
The City of Cleveland is spending $2.5M to equip recycling bins with microchips in an attempt to become more green. The municipality is going to give each household two different garbage cans: one for rubbish, one for recyclables. Each will have a micro-chip inside. This is all part of a new automated trash collection system. Micro-chips will be placed in both your recycling bin and your waste bin. Each chip generates a report that tells the city how efficient their waste collection services are....
Auto Parts: New vs. Remanufactured
Whether doing it yourself or having your mechanic take care of it, when your car needs repairs, you must decide between buying a new replacement part or a part that’s been remanufactured. Before making this decision, there are a few things you should know. Many of us are aware about reman parts such as alternators , distributors, window lift motors, wiper motors, fuel pumps, water pumps, cylinder heads, A/C compressors, starter motors, etc. But there’s a whole slew of other parts that are...
Climate change news – worse than you thought
The 'doomsayers' brayed about climate change. They said ignore it at your peril. And despite some token political efforts and changes in public consciousness concerning environmental issues, governments and industries pretty much did just that: ignored it. An article by the Associated Press states that greenhouse gasses have increased even the worst predictions made by climate scientists only four years ago. This information comes from the US Department of Energy. Global CO2 emissions jumped by 6% in just one year from 2009...

Bacteria the future of storage systems?
A team of scientists from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) won the 2010 iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition organized by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) with their “biological cryptography” project. And the results are amazing. The team developed a way to store gigantic amounts of data using biological storage systems capable of sustaining any environmental changes (including nuclear explosions). But it doesn’t end there. An integrated intrinsic encryption system built-in the data-storing bacteria, could make this form...
