Scotch distillery installs biogas generator to run off whisky waste
Posted by Graham_Land in Science & Technology, Sustainable living, 24 May 2010
Bruichladdich Distillery, located on the Island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland, has been in operation since 1881. The distillery is an independent and traditional business which has used the same equipment since its inception.
Though considered by some to be a ‘green’ industry at heart, whisky making does use plenty of electricity and produces a significant amount of waste. To solve energy and waste disposal problems – for mainly economic rather than environmental reasons – Bruichladdich Distillery has installed a biogas generator that produces methane from ‘pot ale’, a whisky by-product consisting of mostly water.
Mark Reynier, owner of Bruichladdich Distillery, hopes the digester will meet around 80 percent of its electricity needs and save the company up to £120,000 ($175,000) every year.
–CNN
Last year 40% of the locally grown barley used by Bruichladdich was organic. The distillery also uses no coloring, bottles on site and doesn’t chill filter.

Eco-fashion: Ways to Look Eco-fabulous This Fall
Prior to the Climate Week NY°C event happening in New York City this week was New York’s Fashion Week, which had the launch of The Green Shows event, showcasing several different eco-fashion designers’ work. While most of us won’t be able to afford the latest designs off New York or Paris runways, here are some ways you can partake in the eco-fashion movement. Ecoist is first on the list. This is a company that makes and sells a variety of handbags...
Coasts of Chile hit by new earthquake
The American Institute of Geophysics (USGC) stated that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6 (MMS) hit parts of the Chilean coasts earlier today. The earthquake occurred a little past 8 am local time. The epicenter was located 67 miles (108 kilometers) north of Concepcion and 222 miles (357 kilometer) southwest of the capital Santiago. So far no tsunami alert has been declared. To measure the strength of an earthquake, the USGS does not use the Richter scale, but instead...
Copenhagenize Index: The Measure for Bicycle Friendliness in Major Cities
One European bicycle culture consulting firm, Copenhagenize Consulting, released there results for a study exploring the world’s most bicycle friendly cities. By no coincidence, this index is named after the world capital for bicycle culture, Copenhagen. The index takes 20 major cities and analyzes them on 13 categories, including; advocacy, bicycle culture, bicycle infrastructure, perception of safety and social acceptance to name a few. Each category was rated on a scale between zero and four points, with twelve bonus points built...
Green Home Makeover: Helpful and Concise Environmental Videos from National Geographic
A kind of video supplement to National Geographic’s Green Guide, Green Home Makeover is a series of videos with helpful hints on making your home more energy conscious and environmentally friendly. National Geographic’s websites can be a bit tricky to navigate and use a Flash platform (so clicking the ‘back’ button won’t help) but once you familiarize yourself with the many sections available, you will find a vast wealth of Green resources. There is no video section on the Green...
Climate change news – worse than you thought
The 'doomsayers' brayed about climate change. They said ignore it at your peril. And despite some token political efforts and changes in public consciousness concerning environmental issues, governments and industries pretty much did just that: ignored it. An article by the Associated Press states that greenhouse gasses have increased even the worst predictions made by climate scientists only four years ago. This information comes from the US Department of Energy. Global CO2 emissions jumped by 6% in just one year from 2009...
‘Climate Thoughts’ from COP15 website
A section on the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15) homepage entitled ‘Climate Thoughts’ allows you to vote on ideas relating to climate change that you ‘support’. You can also write and link your own climate thoughts and see who agrees with you. Popular climate thoughts on the COP15 site include Sir Paul McCartney’s ‘Meatless Mondays’, urgent action on melting Arctic ice and – most popular of all – a warning against financial bailouts that do not incorporate...
Fashionably green handbags outfitted with dye-sensitized solar cells now available
Hong Kong-based electronics bag manufacturer Mascotte Industrial Associates has infused dye-sensitized solar cells into their bags and backpacks. Created by G24 Innovations, these cheap super thin solar cells are designed to operate indoors. According to Mascotte, it takes around 4 to 5 hours to fully charge a mobile phone using a 15cm by 20cm solar panel. When used indoors, it can take up to twelve hours depending on the lighting. Performance-wise it is not as efficient compared to solar cells that...
Margret Atwood: Year of the Flood
Over the last few years I've read a lot of science fiction – or rather 'speculative fiction' on floods. Massive, destructive, Earth-drowning floods. You know, when runaway climate change causes the polar ice caps to melt and suddenly the Statue of Liberty is nothing but a torch thrusting out from the waters of the New York Bay. I like reading about stuff like that – apocalyptic dystopia's, disastrous future scenarios – so long as I'm warm, dry and well fed. After...
The Urban Sprawl: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You!
We humans can be quite viral, like the common cold. We spread from place to place and clog up the lands and rivers by settling around them. Urban sprawl quite aptly describes the urbanization of green fields and lush forests, river valleys and farmlands, all because we like to be one with nature. But it’s one thing to commune with nature and another to uproot it to make place for you, like a school bully taking the lunch money from...
Living Planet Report 2012: Global environmental failure?
Ready for some doom and gloom, alarmist and generally pessimistic news that will either make you want to not care at all (the current favorite option) or join the Dark Mountain Project? Talking about the environment and pretending to be eco-friendly by wearing a ‘Kiss me, I’m Green’ button has apparently not saved the Earth from going to Hell in a proverbial hand basket. Ready for some shocking, but (honestly) to be expected, figures from the new ‘Living Planet’ report compiled...
