Breaking: Ash from Iceland volcano disrupts Irish flights
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate Change, 4 May 2010
Air traffic over the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and some parts of Scotland has been affected by a new plume of ash erupting from the Eyafjallajökull volcano on Iceland.
All flights to and from airports in Ireland were grounded from 07:00 BST and announced by Nats to resume at 13:00. Air traffic was halted at airports in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides on Monday at 18:00 BST and is expected to resume some time this afternoon.
From a BBC News report:
The decision to lift the restrictions followed safety tests that showed the engines could cope in areas of low density ash.
Though the recent flight ban is small compared to the disruption caused by ash from Eyafjallajökull during April, hundreds of flights have already been affected. A no-fly zone will remain in place in the Northwest corner of British airspace, but is not expected to disrupt further air traffic.
Check this live news blog on the Iceland volcano from the Guardian for further updates as they happen.

Qatar to fly on biofuels, but still has soaring emissions
'Qatar Airways announced yesterday it plans to develop new sources of biofuels in partnership with aerospace and energy firms.' –The National (Qatar) The Arab emirate of Qatar has the highest per-capita level of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. It sometimes shares this dubious honor with Australia, another big exporter of natural gas. But despite Qatar's massive energy and water consumption, enormous burning of fossil fuels and resultant king-size carbon footprint, the emirate's flag carrier airline, Qatar Airways, is embracing...
Dark and Dusty: West Virginia Mountaintop Mining
When John Denver sang “Almost heaven, West Virginia Country roads take me home,” I don’t think he was quite envisioning this: Job loss, water pollution, mountains with their peaks literally blasted off to get to the coal seams that lie underneath. The resulting detritus from this somewhat unusual method of coal mining is then dumped into valleys, burying the streams that naturally occur there. Of course first the land must be deforested. What remains resembles some kind of bleak industrial...
Baltic Sea: worst winter frost since 1996, 50 ferries stuck in ice
The Baltic Sea is known for it’s hard and violent winters. Since 1996, however, the Baltic winter has not been as cold as it is this year. The extreme cold, together with a strong northern wind, creates packs of ice up to 50 inches thick. Fifty ships are currently blocked in the ice again because of this. Alongside 4 ferries with thousands of passengers. The ships are all waiting for the arrival of icebreakers. According to the latest reports, most ships...
Mountain Gorillas Are Great Apes!
They’re big, they’re vegetarian and they’re very much like us. Except they mind their own business. Yet political conflict, the bush meat trade and human thirst for wealth and natural resources are wiping out these gentle, majestic primates. Check out this documentary on mountain gorillas by VBS. The Vice Guide to Travel: Gorillas in the Midst VBS travels to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the mountain gorillas – 200 of the earth’s last 720 — are...
European Space Agency launches satellites to assess climate change impact on Earth’s water systems
On Monday, November 2nd, two satellites were launched into orbit by the ESA or European Space Agency in order to give an overall view of the Earth's water systems and their patterns. Named the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Proba-2, the satellites blasted off from Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia. SMOS's mission is the measuring of 'water retention capacity in soil to help forecast drought and flood risk and calculate the planet's carbon cycle to determine the amount...
Cooking your food the energy-efficient way
While most of us prefer to dine out, or munch on fast foods, we still spend time in our kitchen cooking up meals that will satisfy our taste buds, or tossing in all ingredients from our cupboard into a hot sizzling pan. Indeed, for cooking fanatics, spending most of their time in their kitchen perfecting their gourmet meals can be undoubtedly blissful and harmless. However, some environment-conscious individuals will see a great opportunity here that will benefit not only the...
The Deadly World of Plants: Botanical Assassins May be Lurking in Your Area and Your Home!
Did you know that the Peace Lily is actually toxic; that corn was responsible for a nasty illness which affected 3 million Americans in the early 20th century; and that although beautiful, the Water Hyacinth is actually the world’s worst aquatic weed? If not, then there’s a book you should definitely check out. Last week, I picked up a new book, called Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln’s Mother & Other Botanical Atrocities, by Amy Stewart. This book teaches the...
Green Efforts in the transport industry
All around us we see giant trucks every day. They are each hauling something different, but they also have 2 things in common. First, our society needs these trucks and the goods they are hauling to keep up our day to day lives. And second, for every mile these trucks drive they leave behind them a carbon footprint. The transport industry is one of the biggest contributors to CO2 emissions around the world. While every sector is working to make...
Awesome Green Career Training and Certification Options
If you are searching for a job these days, you may have noticed that some job search websites now offer a green career option. A company may use renewable energy or they may have a recycling program. Perhaps they offer incentives for carpooling, energy saving or other environmental practices; or maybe they are really a green career (eco-wedding planners, anyone?) Whatever the case may be, it’s become quite clear that green jobs are slowly taking over. Some of you may be...
2-meter-long lizards discovered in Philippines
Previously unknown to the scientific community, a 'new' species of monitor lizard has been documented in the Royal Society Biology Letters. Dubbed the Varanus bitatawa, the giant lizard lives in the Sierra Madre forests of Luzon Island in the Northern Philippines, where it is well known to local tribes who hunt it for its meat. It is not often these days for biologists to find new species of large animals, or mega-fauna. But could the deforestation of Luzon, a once heavily...
