Help put an End to Dolphin Slaughter and Captivity!
Posted by Arkisaeo in Nature, Videos & Documentaries, Weird Stuff, Wildlife & Flora, 29 Apr 2010
A host of A-list celebrities have partnered up with the creators of The Cove to encourage people to support the end of dolphin slaughter and captivity.
Featuring a number of stars, from Robin Williams to Jennifer Aniston and more, The Cove’s latest PSA video discusses the grim situation that dolphins face, particularly in Japan. From telling us how awesome their “friend” is, to addressing the unnecessary slaughter, the end of the video sums it up with one, simple quote:
“We are their biggest threat and their only hope.”
You can help, too, by joining The Cove’s site at TakePart.com. There, you can learn more about the dolphins’ situation, calculate your mercury exposure, and find out how you can take action in this important issue.

Rare Siamese Crocodiles Found in Cambodia
A breed of crocodiles thought to be extinct was found in Cambodia by researchers at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center. The Siamese crocodiles had not been spotted in years and are considered critically endangered within 99% of its known habitat. Scientists found more than 30 of them living in Cambodia. A DNA test was conducted on the animals to confirm that they were, indeed, Siamese and the group is now the largest population in captivity (only about 250 of...
Can China’s farms cope with urbanization and pollution?
As China continues to rapidly develop and urbanize, increasing pressure is put on the farmland of the Asian superpower. Pollution from toxic factory waste and an inordinate use of nitrogen fertilizers – more than twice the global average – are deteriorating the quality of China's soil. Expanding urban areas are also diminishing the country's precious arable land. The percentage of China's population that live in cities is expected to rise from 47 to 75 percent within the next thirty years. This...
WWF study shows environmental impact of food
In news relating to today's previous article on the report by UK government backed initiative Forest Footprint Disclosure, the WWF and the Food Climate Research Network have released a similar study. But while Forest Footprint Disclosure covers how global businesses are driving deforestation from the rainforest floor to the cash register, the WWF and FCRN study – called 'How low can we go' – focuses specifically on how food impacts the climate. The study's findings, which detail all stages of food...
U.S. Army to utilize hybrid cars
As the Army advances its initiative to explore energy-efficient methods of running bases off-grid, it has also tapped Bright Automotive to develop a non-combat utility van to reduce their fuel consumption. A reported $1.4 million contract was awarded to Bright Automotive for the plug-in hybrid van project. To help electric vehicle development gain momentum worldwide, Bright Automotive has put up a consulting program in terms of design, engineering, energy storage, propulsion, conversion systems to aid other automotive manufacturers towards greener methods...
BP Oil Spill Updates: Siphoning Issues, Meat Cleaver Threats, and Greenpeace Contests
The Gulf Coast Oil Spill has sure earned BP a lot of negative and bizarre attention. After a month of dealing with the issue, their methods are still being attacked by environmental groups and the media. The most recent issue concerns their latest siphoning method of cleaning up the spill, which dropped from 92,400 gallons per day to 57,120 gallons in the last 24 hours. Apparently, the issue is also enough to upset the average US citizen to the point of...
Naomi Klein on Gulf oil disaster: Neither BP nor the US government can ‘make it right’
Writer and activist Naomi Klein describes in a piece for the Guardian how an overconfident BP recklessly endangered the environment and human culture of the Gulf of Mexico, believing there to be 'little risk' of disaster. Even if a spill will to occur, BP believed, it would be minor and easily manageable. Now that a real – and plainly unmanageable – disaster has actually happened, promises from BP boss Tony Hayward and US President Barack Obama that the Gulf will fully...
The Weird and Wonderful: 163 New Species Discovered!
How would you like to come across a lizard with cat-like eyes, or perhaps a bird-eating frog with fangs? It may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but these creatures are real, and Southeast Asia is their home. Since 2008, researchers working with the WWF organization have discovered 100 plants, 28 fish, 18 reptiles, 14 amphibians, 2 mammals and 1 bird in the Mekong River region. Along with the fanged frog and Cat Ba leopard gecko, the other new...
The Creation of Plastics Just got Sweeter
Recycling is a big part of our everyday lives. The recycling trucks here only collect aluminum and glass. However, downtown there is a recycling site where we take our newspapers, cardboard and plastics. There is the exception of plastic bags, which are not accepted at the recycling site (though people will throw them into the plastic bin all the same). As far as the bags go, we horde them until we have a good amount and then take them to...
Breaking News: Deadly West Virginia Coal Mine Explosion Kills 6; 21 Missing
An explosion at Massey Energy Co.’s Upper Big Branch coal mine in West Virginia killed 6 miners—at least 21 others are still missing. The mine—operated by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co.—has extra oxygen caches throughout emergency escape routes plus airtight refuge chambers that can keep miners alive for 4 days. This particular mine produced 1.2 million tons of coal in 2009 and has nearly 200 employees, most of which work underground. You may have heard of Massey Energy in the news before....
Don’t forget: December 1st is World AIDS Day
It’s been almost 30 years since the first cases of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) were identified among gay men in the United States in 1981. Later evidence was found that the disease existed in the world long before that and that it had nothing to do with the sexual preferences of the people infected. Analysis of a blood sample of a Bantu man, who died of an unidentified illness in the Belgian Congo in 1959, made him the first...
