Disaster tourism: Holidays in Chernobyl’s exclusion zone

Besides older villagers returning and settling the still forbidden and still contaminated land around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine, another strange development has been taking place: guided tours.

Chernobyl and the abandoned downwind city of Prypiat has become a bit of a tourist destination. I say it’s a ‘strange development’, but I completely understand the fascination with post apocalyptic landscapes. The thought of traipsing through a ‘living museum’ contaminated with radioactive fallout is a bit less appealing, however. A tour through Prypiat sounds like a glimpse into the post nuclear disaster world normally exclusively the domain of science fiction.

Yeah, I guess I would go.
