Morocco celebrates Earth Day
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate & Change, climate change, Videos & Documentaries, 25 Apr 2010
Morocco’s farmers face soil degradation, air and water pollution and a changing climate. The North African nation’s coastal waters suffer from overfishing and contamination, which has negatively affected the local fishing industry. But Morocco also cherishes its environment and is making efforts to protect it.
For the first time ever, major Earth Day celebrations are happening in a North African City, in recognition of the Moroccan government’s promises to tackle environmental problems.
Rabat, the capital of Morocco, has been chosen because of the country’s initiatives to set higher environmental standards and introduce a “Green Tax”.

Britain grapples with nuclear power question as foreign radioactive waste is sent back whence it came
On Wednesday the UK began repatriating nuclear waste by shipping 28 half-ton canisters to Japan. The canisters are the first shipment of a cache of 925 tons of foreign radioactive atomic waste that will be returned to various countries of origin from Sellafield nuclear processing site – formerly known as Windscale – in west Cumbria. Besides Japan – Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands will also be receiving shipments of the stuff during the ten-year repatriation process, according to an...
More on the Garbage Patch
I’m depressed. I just watched another documentary on The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The world is infused with plastic and marinated in toxins. Our oceans, still largely clean, clear and pristine-looking, are actually a vast plastic soup steeped in poisonous chemicals, which are consumed by sea life and then in turn by humans. Serves them right, I think, and mentally kick a PET bottle into the senseless ocean of futility I currently think of as “life”. Or does it? I for one never...
Leatherback Sea Turtles May Have a Fighting Chance
The critically endangered leatherback sea turtle may gain a better chance of survival in the Pacific Ocean. NOAA Fisheries officials are considering the possibility of designating special habitat for the turtles off the coasts of California and Oregon. Pushed by a petition and lawsuit filed by conservation groups—including Oceana, the Center for Biological Diversity, and Turtle Island Restoration Network—the decision must be made by December 4th. Since the turtles migrate from nesting areas in Indonesia to the U.S. Pacific coast each...
Green funerals: Six carbon footprints under
Since the human species has more or less successfully extricated itself from the food chain, death just isn’t eco-friendly anymore. The old ‘food for worms’ adage is no longer apt, since worms apparently don’t really fancy formaldehyde. Humans don’t like it in their drinking water either, oddly enough. It seems that these days dying green can be even harder than living green. The modern funeral involves deforestation (in the form of expensive hardwood coffins), chemical pollution of groundwater and both toxic...
It’s Eat or Be Eaten for South African Birds
What do you get when humans deplete a bird’s main food source? An appetite for food chain destruction. This isn’t about any old bird, however, this is about the Great White Pelicans of Malgas Island in South Africa. You see, these pelicans love to eat fish, particularly sardine and anchovies. Unfortunately for them, people have been overfishing off the cost of South Africa. So, these birds need to adapt and find a new food source. Their next choice? Other birds. The main...
Canadian ‘climate spoof’ websites shut down
In an event that touches on issues surrounding freedom of speech, the boundaries between parody and the deliberate misleading of the public – as well as legitimate environmental activism, the Canadian government succeeded in shutting down two websites that lampooned the country's climate policy. The news website commondreams.org reports: The websites that Canada shut down were part of an elaborate "identity correction" carried out by anonymous Canadian activists, the Climate Debt Agents of Action Aid, and The Yes Men. They used...
Gulf oil spill: Claims of positive spin as BP works to seal well
Yesterday and today BP crews are attempting to securely seal the leak on the blown out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico by pumping in cement. Operation ‘static kill’ has so far been successful in halting the flow of oil into the Gulf, which began on April 20th with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform. The latest effort began with BP crews pumping in special mud to stop the leak and will hopefully conclude – after the cement...
George Monbiot confronts the abject failure of humanity to act on climate change
Is environmental writer/Guardian columnist George Monbiot getting all doom and gloom Dark Mountain on us? Well, maybe not quite, but he’s taken a decisive step in that direction. In his recent piece for the Guardian, entitled ‘Climate change enlightenment was fun while it lasted. But now it's dead’, Monbiot laments the undeniable failure of legislation, global cooperation and civil society to tackle the problem of climate change. One of the loudest voices for British environmentalism has given up on the political...

Geothermal Power is Embraced by Canadian University
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is making great strides in the green world. Their most recent effort involves the investment of $4 million into a geothermal energy project, which will be used to power all academic buildings and the campus. Consisting of 375 boreholes—at a cost of $10,000 each—the geothermal system can deliver 8MW of power and has the capability of heating and cooling 1000 homes. Started in 2003, the campus already has 8 buildings that use renewable...
