Breaking: Glacier chunk falls into Peruvian lake causing tsunami, death
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate & Change, Videos & Documentaries, 13 Apr 2010
I didn’t know a tsunami could occur in a lake. I didn’t know a falling piece glacier could cause a tsunami either. But that’s just what happened in the Peruvian Andes when an ice block broke from the massive Hualcan glacier and plunged into a lake, creating a 23-meter tsunami. The resulting rush of water flooded several towns and resulted in at least one death.
The governor of the region that includes the area where the tsunami occurred blamed the disaster on climate change. He may have a point.
From a report in the Guardian:
It was the latest evidence that glaciers are vanishing from Peru, which has 70% of the world’s tropical icefields. They have retreated by 22% since 1975, according to a World Bank report, and warmer temperatures are expected to erase them entirely within 20 years.
Check out this video report on the glacier-tsunami incident in Peru from ITN:

Breaking News: Central America Hit by Tropical Storms and Volcano Eruptions
Hurricane season is officially here: 16 people in Central America were killed by tropical storm Agatha. The storm hit land between Guatemala and Mexico, with wind speeds up to 45 mph (75 kph). Although the storm weakened to a tropical depression, it was still enough to trigger deadly landslides. One in Guatemala City killed 4 people and left 11 others missing; another killed 4 children in Santa Catarina Pinula, and in Quetzaltenango a loose boulder crushed a home--killing the 2...

Update: Good News and Bad News on the Louisiana Oil Rig Explosion
Well, I have good news and bad news about the recently exploded (and now sunken) Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The good news is there appears to be no signs of oil leak or spill from the rig. The bad news is those 11 missing workers are still missing. The rig burned for almost 2 days straight, until it finally sank into the Gulf of Mexico yesterday morning. Although the fire was finally put out, officials were concerned that up to 336,000 gallons...
Geo-engineering and the problem of sea levels
Geo-engineering doesn't prevent at all the rise of the tides. Engineering on a global scale is not a solution, even in an emergency, to the climate damage caused by human activities. This is the conclusion reached by a team of British, Chinese and Danish researchers after a new study on the future of the Earth's oceans. In their opinion there is no escape: sea levels will rise at least 30-70 cm by the end of 2100, even using the latest...
White Nose Syndrome: The Mysterious Bat-Killing Disease
Bats are well-known as creatures of the night and as something you will either love or hate. They have been associated with vampires, ghosts and death. Some people believe they are sacred or bring luck and happiness. Others believe they are trickster spirits or a bad omen to come across. Whatever way you may view the bat, do it while you can because some bat species are fighting for their lives. Research conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation...
The Critically Endangered Siberian Crane Needs Your Help
Have you ever seen a Siberian Crane? It’s an absolutely beautiful bird. Unfortunately, it’s also a critically endangered bird. The Siberian Crane is a migratory bird. It travels about 3,100 miles (5,000 km) every year from northern Siberia to either China or Iran. Much of the wetlands along its migration route are being drained for farming. There is also an issue with China’s Three Gorges Dam, where 98% of the remaining Siberian Cranes go for winter. Their wintering area near the...
Denmark’s Eco-Architecture Now Going to the Arts
The Danes are going through a green building frenzy as of late and it doesn’t look like they’ll be slowing down or stopping any time soon. Yet another eco-architecture project is being planned for Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus. Designed by 3xn and Nord Architects, a new cultural center shall make way for those interested in visual arts, literature and scenography—the practice of making things like theatre sets and costumes. In particular, the Northern Goods Railway center will serve to inspire...
Ecocide: Indonesia’s palm oil industry
The coal and palm oil industries have been getting away with ecocide in the forests of Indonesia, threatening the traditional, sustainable way of life of local villagers and destroying the delicately balanced ecology of the region. Now the palm oil firm PT Munte Waniq Jaya Perkasa is moving into a previously untouched area of forest in East Kalimantan province. Villagers, who both depend on and care for the forests, are struggling to defend this remaining forest oasis from further ecocide at...
Floating Island Structures to be Built for The Maldives
The lowest country in the world may have found an interesting solution to a rather alarming problem. The Maldives is an absolutely amazing place, consisting of 26 atolls (a ring of coral reef) and nearly 1200 small islands. It’s also severely affected by climate change. Some people say the islands are sinking. In fact, they only have approximately 6 feet of natural elevation above sea level. If something isn’t done about climate change now, the entire chain could be completely underwater...
