Ted Danson on the environment
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate & Change, Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, 3 Apr 2010
Actor Ted Danson has been involved in environmental activism since the 1980s when he was star of the hit sitcom Cheers. On April 1st he sat down to talk with CNN about the reasons for his environmentalism as well as current topics including ocean acidification, the need for clean energy, and President Barack Obama’s recent opening up of US coastlines to offshore oil drilling.
The environmental issue closest to Danson’s heart is the state of the Earth’s oceans. In addition to the below video interview, the actor has penned an opinion piece for CNN Eco Solutions, which explains his passion and concern for the oceans. Danson takes up topics such as marine conservation, ocean pollution and government-subsidized overfishing:
The industrial way we fish for seafood is harming the marine habitats that all ocean life depends upon. Indiscriminate commercial fishing practices that include miles of driftnets, longlines with thousands of lethal hooks and bottom trawls are ruining ocean ecosystems by killing non-seafood species, including sea turtles and marine mammals.

Breaking: Gaddafi may sabotage oil pipelines to Mediterranean
Time Magazine has cited a source close to Colonel Gaddafi’s regime in Libya claiming that the North African dictator may sabotage oilfields and pipelines to the Mediterranean Sea. In the first Gulf War of 1991, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein ordered engineers to burn oil fields and blow up wells in Kuwait, burning one billion barrels of crude and creating an ecological catastrophe which killed vegetation and wildlife, polluted groundwater and poisoned the local human population. Besides cutting oil supplies to Europe, if...
Compost waste to power streetlights
Another quirky idea among the sea of “green” innovative concepts is streetlights powered by trash. The brainchild of designer Haneum Lee, the Gaon Street Light is a lamppost that has a trash can at its base. Methane from the composted waste thrown in by pedestrians would be used to power the lamp. The idea seems promising but is practicability-challenged. Would tossing regular non-biodegradable trash into bins render it ineffective and how much methane is needed for it to work? These and...
Finland Announces Plans to Use More Renewable Energy
Finland announced plans to step up and meet EU requirements on cutting greenhouse gas emissions this week. The EU requirement is to raise the share of renewable energy to 38% of energy consumption by 2020. In order to meet this goal, Finland must raise renewable energy production by 38 terawatt hours. How do they plan to reach this goal? Well, on top of using their current nuclear power system, Finland also plans on adding wood-based and wind energy systems, plus...
Ban on bluefin tuna fails at endangered species convention
The threatened bluefin tuna will not be granted protected status. Japan and Canada opposed a ban on international trade on bluefin for economic reasons and received support from many developing nations. The Guardian reports that the vote at the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Qatar tallied 172 member nations against the ban, with 43 in favor and 14 abstentions. The proposed trade ban was introduced by Monaco and had the support of the United States, Norway...
Update: More ways to help tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan
In addition to Google Person Finder’s 2011 Japan Earthquake service and ShelterBox’s aid program for victims, several other organizations are mobilizing to help those affected by the recent tsunami and earthquake in northern Japan. Japanese authorities have upgraded the quake to a 9.0 on the Richter scale. I have been keeping up to date on the situation via the Guardian’s live news blog, where it was posted that Save the Children has set up a fund for Japan’s earthquake/tsunami victims. You...
Future primitive: Where is humanity headed?
When I was a little kid in the 1970s, my brother had a poster on his wall depicting an artist’s renderings of three possible future environments with the headline, ‘Which future would you choose?’ One showed a future in which man had chosen to live in harmony with nature and developed eco-friendly technology. A thriving green landscape dotted with white globes and pods while happy future-people tended vegetable gardens in the fresh air and had scintillating conversations about what great choices...
Crazy, weird and kind of cool: Geo-engineering against climate change
NBC Nightly News reports on different approaches to mitigating climate change – and more specifically global warming – by using geo-engineering techniques. Some geo-engineering projects sound daring and risky, but perhaps also worth researching. From sun-blocking parasols in outer space, cloud seeding, and various methods of pumping sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, whether they are practical or miss the point entirely, these potential 'last resorts' for dealing with global warming are at least interesting. Msnbc.com – Geo-engineering a last resort climate...
Busting Global Warming Myths
Despite the media attention climate change has had in the past years, many people are still unsure of what global warming is. In this age of 24/7 lighting fast information, we’re bombarded with all kinds of “facts” about the environment, so much so that we have a difficult time telling the truth from the real thing. Here are some of the top global warming myths that people still believe in. Myth #1: There is no real consensus in the scientific community...
Climate talks in Bolivia: Capitalism vs. justice
Bolivia has been hosting an international summit, named the World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth, in the city of Cochabamba. The talks began on the 19th and finish today. From a report by the Environmental News Service: More than 20,000 indigenous, environmental and civil society delegates from 129 countries were in attendance as President Morales welcomed them to the conference at a soccer stadium in the village of Tiquipaya on the outskirts of the city of...
Obama Announces Plans to Reimburse US Homeowners for Energy Conserving Upgrades
Do you live in the US? Do you live a green or environmentally friendly lifestyle? Do you want to make your home more energy efficient (but perhaps lack the funds or time to do so)? If you answered yes to all 3 questions, you may be interested in this bit of news. Earlier this week, President Barack Obama announced plans to reimburse US homeowners who make changes to their home that will conserve energy. In a statement delivered at Georgia’s Savannah...
