For a bit of good news in the Asian animal kingdom, there might be a new member of the Sumatran Rhinoceros family! A camera set up in Borneo captured a picture of a female rhino on February 25th of this year. Given the size of the rhino, it is very possible that she may have been pregnant at the time. The image is the first ever to be taken of a wild female Sumatran Rhinoceros thought to be pregnant. Raymond Alfred...
Eco Gadgets: Solar energy harvesting green badge as charger for mobile devices
The advent of eco-friendly mobile phones made from sustainable materials and powered by renewable energy resources has a lot of people eagerly anticipating its public release. However, since most mobile phone are mostly kept inside bags or pockets integrating solar panels to power the mobile device is rendered impractical. A Chinese industrial designer helped develop a solution for this problem, the green badge. Made up of a solar cell module, it will harness solar energy which will then be stored in a...
Guardian editorials on cold snap put climate skeptics in their place
It's as predictable a feature of the British winter as log fires and roasting chestnuts: a national outpouring of idiocy every time some snow falls. –Guardian Ouch. No vitriolic venom is spared for so-called 'climate skeptics' in an Environment Blog opinion piece by Leo Hickman and George Monbiot in Wednesday's Guardian. They are having none of the right wing politics masked as scientific skepticism by journalists and members of the U.K.'s parliament. True, Northern Europe and parts of the U.S....
Valentine’s Day: The History, Celebrating, and Boycotting of a Hallmark Holiday
Ah, Valentine’s Day—a day of love, romance, and showing that special person in your life how much you care. You may be wondering, ‘how can I have a green Valentine’s Day?’ Well, you could: buy organic candy, cook a romantic dinner instead of dining out, obtain seeds to plant for spring instead of buying roses that will soon wilt and die, or do other such things. There is a very simple secret to have an excellent, green Valentine’s Day. Don’t celebrate...
The Deadly World of Plants: Botanical Assassins May be Lurking in Your Area and Your Home!
Did you know that the Peace Lily is actually toxic; that corn was responsible for a nasty illness which affected 3 million Americans in the early 20th century; and that although beautiful, the Water Hyacinth is actually the world’s worst aquatic weed? If not, then there’s a book you should definitely check out. Last week, I picked up a new book, called Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln’s Mother & Other Botanical Atrocities, by Amy Stewart. This book teaches the...
CO2 emissions in the aftermath of the economic crisis: not any better than before
Figures from the Global Carbon Project, recently featured in an article in Nature Geoscience, brings forward new figures of CO2 decrease as a result of the recent and still actual economic crisis. The carbon emission levels of today are almost at the same level again as they were before the economic crisis, with only a minor decrease of 1,3 percent in 2009 and not the 2,8 percent as anticipated by climate scientists. Originally, climate scientists where expecting bigger carbon emission reductions...
Hong Kong Air Pollution is Becoming Increasingly Life-Threatening
China keeps placing in the top 20 list for one thing in particular, and it’s not something to be proud of. World Bank places 16 Chinese cities in their top 20 list of the world’s most polluted cities in terms of air quality; and for those that live in Hong Kong the air quality is not likely to change for the better any time soon. How bad is the air pollution in Hong Kong? Well, roadside air pollution levels reached life-threatening...
Fuel, food or fraud: New study on the ethics of biofuel
Can a new generation of biofuels ensure we don't increase greenhouse gas emissions and take food from the poor to fuel our cars? –Guardian The issues surrounding biofuels are complicated and confusing. While all biodiesel or ethanol burns cleaner than fossil fuels, some biofuel production creates as many or more greenhouse gas emissions than regular gasoline or petrol. Biodiesel from palm oil, for example, turned out to be environmentally hazardous due to the utilization of slash and burn agriculture and clearing of...
Stubborn Weeds Force Farmers to Resort to Oudated, Environmentally Hazardous Methods
How many of you have an outdoor garden? Okay, and how many of you use Roundup weed killer? Although Roundup has a reputation of being one of the top weed killers on the market and much safer than other chemical alternatives, there are still some stubborn weeds out there that are resistant to Roundup and have actually evolved over the past 34 years (since Roundup’s introduction). Unfortunately, this weed evolution has forced farmers (and others) to resort to some outdated...
UN biodiversity chief: Destroy nature, increase poverty and insecurity
In advance of a major UN meeting for the Convention on Biological Diversity, the organization’s secretary-general, Ahmed Djoghlaf, recently warned of the threats posed against the natural world – and life itself – by population growth, urbanization, agriculture and climate change. Despite these increasing threats and an ongoing mass extinction in the natural world, which is almost 1,000 times the normal ‘background’ rate, governments are simply not acting to preserve biodiversity and the overall health of the planet. No country has met...
