Breaking: Dense ash cloud from Iceland volcano suspends more flights in UK, Ireland
Several airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland stopped all flights at 07:00 BST this morning, with more airport closures in those regions planned for this afternoon. The culprit is, of course, Iceland's Eyafjallajökull volcano, which has proceeded to emit ash into northwestern European skies. Changing weather conditions such as the strength and direction of winds have and will continue to affect air traffic conditions over the British Isles. For more details on airport closures and ash cloud conditions see this BBC report...
UK cosmetics firm Lush says ‘nay, palm’
Palm oil has made its way into countless processed foods, soaps and cosmetics. It is also used to make 'biofuel' and even napalm – the gelled gasoline used to horrifying effect during the Vietnam War. Now palm oil is engaged in another war – a war of the environment. Palm oil cultivation often destroys vital natural resources via the utilization of slash and burn agriculture and rainforest clearing in Indonesia and Malaysia. This type of cultivation not only results in the...
Eco-friendly alternatives to Air Purifiers
Before understanding why eco-friendly alternatives to air purifiers are needed, you should know a thing or two about air purifiers and indoor air pollution. Air purifiers are used to rid the indoor air of pollutants. You will be surprised to learn that indoor air is heavily polluted by a variety of sources - chemicals used in furniture, fumes from cooking fuel, outdoor air pollutants, tobacco smoke, asbestos coated insulation, pesticides and more. The pollutants in the indoor air keep accumulating leading...
History Comes Alive: Australian Scientists Discover Living Prehistoric Creatures Below Great Barrier Reef
The history of this planet is an awesome thing to learn about and there are so many ways you can do that. You can go to a museum, read books, check out a historical reenactment event, or specialize in the hunt for fossils and other artifacts. Some people say history comes alive, but what if it never died in the first place? Australian scientists have stumbled upon an amazing find at Osprey Reef, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef....
SLOP17: Durban stinks
In 2009 you heard the trite references to Shakespeare about something being ‘rotten in the state of Denmark’ during the COP15 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Well it wasn’t just the pickled herring. Nothing stinks worse than corruption, greed and short sightedness in the face of very real human and environmental threats, but toxic waste comes pretty close. Industrial solvents, benzene, dioxins, bleach and sulphides are just a fragrant after scent wafting through the air and just close enough that they might tickle...
Update: Gunman at Discovery Channel Headquarters Killed by Police
Today, a man entered the Discovery Channel Headquarters near Washington, D.C. and held 3 people hostage at gunpoint. The man also had canisters strapped to his body that were suspected to be explosives of some kind. After several hours of negotiations, one thing led to another and the gunman ended up shot to death by the police. The shots detonated one of the devices strapped to his body, but it is still unknown whether the others were explosive or not. All...
Solar powered traffic light conceptualized in China
The advent of solar panels gave way to several innovative ideas on how to utilize solar energy for contemporary use. Chinese designers Cheng-Tsung Feng, Yao-Chieh Lin and Bo-Jin Wang have conceptualized a solar-powered traffic light. Instead of the usual three-tiered design, they proposed a single unit that will switch from red to amber then green with the use of light-emitting diodes or LED technology and its power source would be from solar panels attached to its hood. The idea seems...
U.S. – West Coast to welcome first wave of electric cars
2010 means electric cars will soon be humming around America's city streets, emitting nothing into the air but a sense of self-satisfaction and superiority. Even Prius drivers will hang their heads in shame, outdone and one upped in the latest 'whose got the newest green toy' competition. Of course, most parts of the U.S. will have a bit of respite before the coming vehicular revolution kicks into top gear, and can continue belching noxious fumes with impunity for a little...
Centralia, PA – An American ghost town with an underground mine fire
Those intrepid 'slacker' journalists at VBS.tv certainly have a knack for finding fascinating stories. This time it's the curious tale of Centralia, a former coalmining town in Pennsylvania, which had an active mining industry from the mid 19th century until a mine fire broke out in 1962. It's still burning. Watch the VBS report about Centralia below. By Graham Land Additional resources: Smithsonian Magazine – Fire in the Hole Pictures of Centralia...
Video: Asteroid heading towards Earth!
Don’t worry, fellow alarmists, it will miss us by a couple hundred thousand miles, but it will still be the closest event of its kind in the last 200 years, according to an ITN report. Today, Tuesday the 8th of November, the giant Asteroid 2005 YU 55 will pass between the Earth and the Moon, but you’ll need a good telescope to catch a glimpse. The Asteroid will be traveling very fast and is made mostly of carbon, making it black...
