Tropical Cyclone Tomas hits Fiji
Posted by Murielle in Climate & Change, 15 Mar 2010
Tropical Cyclone Tomas hit Fiji’s northern islands Monday evening (local time) with winds of up to 275 km/h (170 mph) and heavy rain showers. Currently, there is no immediate report of extreme damage.
The Category 4 storm is supposed to be the heaviest cyclone to hit the islands in the past twenty years, and it’s the second-most destructive on a five-point scale. As it heads northeast, it is expected to reach its peak force during the night of Monday to Tuesday and sideswipe the main island, Viti Levu.
Predictions suggest that the cyclone will cause floods due to the heavy rains and tsunami-like waves at the shores of the island.

Oil Sheen Pollution has a New Arch-Nemesis: Microbubbles!
There have been a couple nasty oil spills lately, including in the Timor Sea and San Francisco Bay Area. Anyone who has ever seen the impact of these unfortunate events knows the harm it can cause to the environment and the animals that may be in the area at the time. One of the biggest problems of an oil spill is figuring out how to clean it up and deal with all that polluted water. The sheen alone (that shiny...
Creature Feature: The Round Island Boa
This week’s Creature Feature takes us to Round Island: an uninhabited nature reserve off the coast of Mauritius—which is also an island and approximately 560 miles east of Madagascar. The Round Island Boa (or Round Island Keel-scaled Boa) is an endangered species and the only existing member of the Bolyeriidae family. They can grow to a length of 5 feet (150 cm), are typically dark brown in color (with lighter-colored stomachs) and the males are typically smaller than the females. They...
Fountain spouts sparkling water in Paris park
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my travels on the continent it’s this: Europeans love bubbly water. I’m not sure why, as it tickles the nose and tastes weird. Plus you can’t chug it if you’re really hot and thirsty or you might commit the unforgivable faux pas of belching loudly in a Parisian park. It just so happens that in an attempt to discourage bottled water consumption, the Jardin de Reuilly in Paris has installed a fountain dispensing free chilled...
Endangered Species of the Week: Purple frog
Species: Purple frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting Fact: The purple frog is the sole surviving member of an ancient group of amphibians that evolved some 130 million years ago! You may have noticed the purple frog on our homepage before, but this amazing amphibian is so strange we couldn’t help getting it out again! This frog has a highly distinctive and somewhat comical appearance, with a hugely bloated body and short, stout limbs. The small head seems almost too short for the...
Dateline NBC meets New York’s ‘ECO cops’
Meet New York State Police's Environmental Conservation Officers. For their 'Green is Universal' coverage, NBC's Dateline follows two green-clad cops who enforce environmental law on the streets of New York City. But these ECO Police are no new green trend – NBC's Chris Hansen reports that they've 'been around for over a century'. A police force that once concentrated on fish and game regulations now also tackles issues such as pollution and food sanitation in America's biggest and busiest city,...
Check Out San Francisco’s Urban Forest Map Project!
Amber Bieg is on a mission: to account for every single tree in San Francisco. It all started 5 years ago when Bieg was planting trees in the North Beach area of San Francisco. She realized that “it was really inefficient for one individual, or even a group, to go out with GPS units and survey trees”. So, she started on a plan to get the whole community involved. Bieg partnered up with ecologist, Kelaine Vargas, and the Urban Forest Map...
CO2 Cubes: Climate Change Inspired Art
Carbon emissions are constantly being discussed in the news and everyday life these days. Most of the time, you can’t get through a single newspaper or television program with at least one mention of CO2 anymore. And if you know anything about the whole “carbon footprint” concept, you’ll know that it measures your CO2 output in tons; but do you have any idea what a ton of CO2 even looks like? Millennium ART does. Millennium ART is a project management group...
The Importance of Owning a Green Car Today
A green car is any of a number of vehicles available on the market that offer high mileage through either hybrid or electric technology - or a combination of both. If you're considering buying a new vehicle, there are many different reasons to put a green vehicle at the top of your wish list. • Fuel economy. With a green car, you'll get better fuel economy. Of course, that means the cost of driving your vehicle is lower than with a...
Video: Dolphins rescued from drought conditions in Bolivia
Two freshwater dolphins were recently rescued from a Bolivian river after being trapped there for months due to low water levels. The smallish dolphins weigh between 30 and 40 kilos (66-88 pounds) each and were among a group of nine river dolphins which have been stranded in a Rio Grande tributary for over a month. The rescue operation is ongoing. From an Associated Press report: The two dolphins were caught in nets and brought to shore. They were put in padded, water-filled aluminum...
Breaking News: Would You Like a Side of Toxic Metal With Your Order of Whale Meat?
A shocking report on a Sperm Whale study released today may turn a lot of heads—both pro-whaling and anti-whaling activists alike. The report, issued by conservation and research group Ocean Alliance, shows that high levels of aluminum, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, silver and titanium are found in tissue samples taken by dart gun from 955 whales, over a period of more than 5 years (starting in 2000). The whales ranged across 87,000 miles, from polar regions to the equator and it’s...
