Dozens of Starving Sea Lion Pups Found Along California’s Beaches
Nature is known to be both kind and cruel; but regardless of what mood strikes, Nature is always wonderful. However, there are times when bad things happen that Nature did not intend; things that are caused by too much intrusion and interference. Due to these interferences, far too many creatures have suffered and it may (unfortunately) be too late to help some of them. This article is about one time when that intrusion has gone too far—and yes, Global Warming is to blame.
Throughout this past winter, dozens of sick and starving sea lion pups were found washed up on Southern California’s beaches. Many of them have died. According to Veterinarian Richard Evans, most of the pups are in a “skin and bones” condition—a very critical state that simply should not be. And why are they in this condition? Because the ocean is currently lacking what they need: food.
Sea lion pups feed on certain fish and squid, but thanks to global warming and crazy weather events like El Niño, those certain fish and squid have become rather scarce. To give a better idea of the situation of the pups: The Pacific Marine Mammal Center treated 27 of these starving pups since December—only 11 of them survived.
You can find out more about the sea lions and how you can help the Pacific Marine Mammal Center by checking out their official website. Donations are always appreciated and supplies are needed. Volunteer positions are also available. Oh, and if you are curious about the pups, click here to view some images—though I will warn you, they are not pleasant to view.
