Ady Gil Captain Faces Arrest in Japan
Two months ago, the Ady Gil was rammed, severed in half, and destroyed.
About a month ago, Captain Pete Bethune of the Ady Gil, jumped aboard the Shonan Maru #2, with the intentions of handing over a bill for the cost of his ship plus making a citizen’s arrest of the Shonan Maru #2’s captain. However, the attempt was futile and resulted in Captain Bethune being held captive aboard the Japanese ship.
Now, the Shonan Maru #2 is moving ever closer to Japan—and to Captain Bethune’s arrest. The Japanese Coast Guard is currently waiting for the Shonan Maru #2’s arrival, at which point they will arrest the New Zealand native upon his arrival. If Captain Bethune is convicted (of whatever crimes they claim could possibly be worse than their involvement in the destruction of his ship), he could face up to 3 years of imprisonment, or a fine of 100,000 yen ($1,100 USD).
This news sure comes at a convenient time, considering that the 2 remaining Sea Shepherd vessels (the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker) were both raided and searched by Australian police only a few days ago—at the request of Japanese officials. Numerous items were confiscated from the ships, including videos, photos, logbooks, and computer hard drives.
More information will be posted as things happen.
