The Soil Clock: sustainable time management
Posted by Murielle in Science & Technology, Sustainable living, 4 Mar 2010
The Soil Clock is a Dutch design by Marieke Staps. With this design, Marieke graduated in 2008 from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. This cute clock is an ecological alternative for those seeking to achieve a sustainable lifestyle. The Soil Clock or Mud Clock (like the Dutch call it) works using the soil of two cute pot plants that, through a copper-and zinc wire attached to the clock, generates energy through the growth and life cycle of the plants.
The clock, along with other fun, useful and ecological gadgets, is for sale at Heavenly Heroes. The plants however are not included the selling price of 35 EUR (approximately 48 USD).

The Arctic Tern Migration: A Most Amazing Journey
Animals all over the planet migrate, from the tiny butterfly to the great whale. However, no other animal migration can compare to that of the Arctic Tern. The Arctic Tern is a type of seabird. They can be found in places around the world; some of which consider them to be a threatened species. They feed on smaller marine animals and can have a particularly long life for a bird—20 to 30 years is not uncommon. Oh, and they migrate an...

Does recycling work?
I used to hear that recycling was bunk; that it was at best in an initial or transitional phase, but currently an inefficient use of energy and resources, and even potentially polluting. Critics called it a massive, coordinated publicity stunt devised to placate the public and convince us that we’re doing something good when we’re really all just having a picnic on the beach, blissfully unaware of the toxic tidal wave of trash that will eventually kill us all. That...
Breaking News: Deadly accident in China coal mine
Rescue workers have been hurrying to free trapped coal miners in northern China after a gas explosion took place in a state coal mine on Saturday (November 21). According to an article by the Associated Press, reports from China put the number of dead at 42, with 31 rescues and many still trapped. China Daily puts the death toll at 74 as of early Sunday. 80% of coal mines in China are unregulated, the AP article goes on to say, but...
Ivory Trade Steadily on the Rise, Despite Poaching Ban
Although the ivory trade was made illegal, poaching incidents have increased over the years, pushing African Elephants ever closer to the brink of extinction. Recently, more than 2,600 pounds (1,200 kilograms) of bloodstained ivory were seized from 100 illegally killed elephants at airports. Kenya and Ethiopian authorities used specially trained dogs to sniff out the shipments of ivory; both of which were to be sent as “unaccompanied luggage” to Bangkok. Even though the ivory trade was banned internationally in 1989, it...
RealClimate.Org: Get Your Climate Change Facts Straight
Global Warming antagonists, anti-greenies and conspiracy theorists are always looking for an excuse or a way out. They say Climate Change is not real. They say there is no proof or that the proof is all faked. With the recent hacking mayhem that occurred, they see it as their big opportunity to show the world that we’ve all been duped. A few vague e-mails without a shred of any proof of deception is their big weapon right now, and conveniently...
The Green Lighthouse of Denmark: A Beacon for Climate Change
The Danes have done it again. They have made yet another positive mark on the world, in the fight against climate change. Apparently hosting the big climate change event of the year was not enough for them and that is where the Green Lighthouse comes in. The new Green Lighthouse building has just been unveiled at the University of Copenhagen. Designed by Christensen & Co. Architect, this building will be the new student services center and is to act as a...
Poland’s Białowieża forest is Europe’s natural time capsule
Last fall I had the opportunity to visit Europe’s last remaining primeval forest, the Białowieża forest in northeastern Poland. This is one of the few remaining places on the continent where nature can be observed as it once was, before the drastic reshaping of human activity. It is home to animals such as elk, wild boars, wolves, wizent (European bison), lynx, eagles and wild horses. But there is a sharp cleavage between business interests and those who wish to preserve the...
China: Good news for forests, bad news for hippos?
The Chinese government is adopting an incentives scheme to preserve the Asian giant's fragile forests and biodiversity. According to the new legislation, wealthy urbanized regions in China will be obliged to compensate areas that preserve their natural riches, notably forests that sequester carbon. This figure - which takes into account carbon sequestration, water conservation, biodiversity protection and biomass production – suggests the administration is seeking not just a new set of values, but a new role for itself now that the...
Study shows smokers are less intelligent
A study of over 20,000 Israeli military recruits suggests that smokers have lower IQs than non-smokers. Reuters reports on the Israeli study, which takes a different approach to previous studies by attempting to exclude subjects with mental and behavioral problems. To better understand the smoking-IQ relationship, the researchers looked at 20,211 18-year-old men recruited into the Israeli military. The group did not include anyone with major mental health problems, because these individuals are disqualified from military service. –Reuters According to the findings, the average...
