Breaking News: Sea Shepherd Successfully Escorts Japanese Out of Whale Sanctuary!
Posted by Arkisaeo in Nature, 10 Feb 2010
I am happy to announce that the Sea Shepherd crew have finally managed to successfully escort the majority of the Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary!
While there has not been any further sighting of the Yushin Maru 3 since the collision last week, Sea Shepherd managed to get the other 4 remaining Japanese ships–Nisshin Maru, Shonan Maru No. 2, Yushin Maru 1, Yushin Maru 2–north of the 60 degrees line and continue to head on a north by northwest direction.
Bob Barker captain, Chuck Swift, stated:
“We intend to keep on their tail and to prevent any whaling operations for as long as our fuel reserves last and that should be for another few weeks, at least.”

Europe: Fish dependence day nothing to celebrate
Yesterday was named ‘fish dependence day’ by the New Economics Foundation (NEF); marking July 9, 2010 as the date that Europe ate its fish quota for the year in terms of sustainability. A new analysis by the NEF entitled ‘Fish Dependence: The Increasing Reliance of the EU on Fish From Elsewhere’, highlights the unsustainable nature of the fishing industry in relation to Europe’s consumption. From yesterday forward, Europe will be in essence, living off of non-European fish. From a UK Press Association...
Large Invasive Snakes Pose High Threat to Florida Wildlife
For decades, all Florida had to worry about were alligators. Now, it seems they have a bigger problem on their hands; 5 bigger problems, to be precise: snakes. Large, invasive snakes are becoming quite the problem in southern Florida. Most likely, the snakes were set loose by pet owners or escaped from other facilities. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, except they are breeding by the thousands and devouring native species. The snakes also have no issue with traveling long distances,...
Does summer time reduce energy consumption?
Since 2007, daylight saving time (DST) in the United States starts nearly 3 weeks earlier than in previous years. It now begins on the second Sunday of March, while Europe begins European Summer Time (EST) on the last Sunday of March. But why do we do 'spring forward' and does it have any real benefits, such as saving energy? Below are two video reports from msnbc.com that offer differing opinions on the subject. According to the United States Department of Energy, daylight saving...
Climate change affecting Rwanda’s gorillas
According to a UN report an increase in global temperatures puts up to 1/3 of all Earth’s animals at risk of extinction. The gorillas of Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains in central Africa are already at risk from rising temperatures. Changes in rainfall and hotter weather mean the vegetation the gorillas depend on changes growth patterns, moving up the mountain into higher altitudes. The gorillas provide Rwanda with tourist revenue and the rainfall in the Virunga Mountains feeds rivers and provides hydro electricity for...
The Friday Question: In our lives what does it really mean to “Be Green”?
Whoever is concerned about the environment, the world we live in and the future we are creating for our children, is surely well aware of the big climate and ecological challenges we are facing today. Creating, participating in or staying informed thanks to communities of green activists online is a joy and passion for most of us. In that sense we are rightfully using the Internet to raise awareness and commitment by compiling, passing out, sharing and twittering the information...
Environment Art: Painting the Town Green!
Green is the new color of controversy. Love it hate it, you cannot ignore it. Green is all about being pro-environment, as well as the money and greed that stands in the way of all things pro-environment and green is also the new trend in the art scene. Well, it’s not really that new because “greening” of art actually started in the 1960s, when artists began to feel that the new and modern art of the time was not in harmony...
Air travel and climate change – is it possible to fly Green?
We already know that airplanes emit a lot of CO2. But how much of an environmental impact does flying have when compared to other modes of transport? What about offsetting the carbon footprint of flying by participating in ecotourism or running planes on biodiesel? Besides CO2, airplanes emit water vapor, nitrous oxides, sulfate, and soot. Since this takes place much higher in the atmosphere than emissions that come from other sources, their effects are more harmful. Additionally, the Intergovernmental Panel on...
Giant stumps from African rainforest make startling sculptures in London’s Trafalgar Square
Entitled 'Ghost Forest', Scottish artist Angela Palmer's installation in the famous Trafalgar Square in central London is a synthesis of art and environmental activism. Though Palmer downplays the activism aspect in an interview with CNN, it is clear that her work is meant to provoke thoughts and emotions about deforestation, especially in the rainforests of Ghana from where the giant tree stumps originate. Ghost Forest is made up of ten massive stumps in all from nine different types of rainforest...
Q: Energy efficient or traditional light bulbs?
I have mixed feeling about energy efficient bulbs. They aren’t easily disposed of and contain mercury – isn’t it dangerous? What are the advantages of using them? A: Energy saving light bulbs should not be put in your household waste. Because they belong to the ‘electrical waste and electronic equipment’ category, sellers are obliged to provide information on how they can be recycled. The amount of mercury that energy efficient bulbs contain is as small as the head of a pin. They...
