Earth Hour: Join the World in Total Darkness to Fight Climate Change!
Set your calendar aside for March 27th because another big climate change event is planned for that night.
Earth Hour is set to return for another year, as millions of people across the globe switch off their lights for one hour in an annual campaign held to show the effects of climate change. At least 250 cities have already signed up for the event this year. Last year’s Earth Hour included international landmarks, such as the Las Vegas Strip, Sydney’s Opera House, and London’s Big Ben and Houses of Parliament going pitch black for the event.
The campaign started in 2007 when over 2 million Sydney residents switched off lights in their homes, offices and businesses for 1 hour as a means to show the relation between electricity consumption and carbon pollution. Last year, the event expanded to nearly 4,000 cities worldwide. This year’s event already has confirmation from Rome, Moscow, Hong Kong, Dallas, and a number of other cities across the Earth.
In the past, Earth Hour simply asked participants to switch their lights off for one hour. This year, they are asking everyone to go above and beyond the one hour limit. WWF-Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Greg Bourne, explained:
“We’re asking people to go beyond turning off lights and instead make an Earth Hour resolution to start something bigger. Switching off your lights is a great first step, but your true environmental impact is much bigger than just your energy bill.”
The event is set to start on Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 pm, wherever you are in the globe. All you have to worry about is when it reaches 8:30 pm in your time zone and prepare to plunge yourself into darkness!
If you are wondering what can be done, check out the Earth Hour website, as many events are expected to happen. You can also find out ways to start your own event or support the cause. Last year, I and others simply played card games by candle light. How you spend your time is up to you, just make sure all power is off (that includes computers and televisions)!
