Green Apartments to be Built in Malmo, Sweden
Do you live in Sweden? Are you interested in passive living? Do you want a green apartment?
If you answered yes to these questions, then it may help you to know that 4 green apartments—with passive house techniques—are being added to the city of Malmö. The project, called Salongen 35, is the winner of a passive house design competition that was held by the builder Höllviksnäs Förvaltnings AB. Designed by Kjellgren Kaminsky, the apartments are expected to be built on the last empty site in the Bo01 housing area.
What exactly does passive housing mean? Well, passive house structures are (usually) extremely insulated and as such, most of the heat will come from energy generated within the house—in other words, the energy that comes from people, animals, household equipment and appliances will provide most of the heat for the home.
Along with this, there will be a number of green features added to the apartments. All of them will have solar panels and exterior venetian blinds (to allow the winter sun in and keep the summer sun out). All appliances provided are rated for minimum energy consumption and all water faucets will use minimal water consumption. There are also plans to add flower boxes, lawns, green walls and roofs; use eco-friendly building materials; and offer all occupants green electricity.
Oh, and that’s not all. Parts of the inside, such as the laundry and kitchen floors, will be made of recycled terracotta. Plus, if you love getting dirty and growing things, you’ll be happy to know that there will also be a greenhouse added, so you can grow your own herbs, vegetables, and other plants. Should you feel like having guests, there is also a nice little park that will be available on the west side of the site, complete with plants and benches.
Construction of these apartments is expected to happen (hopefully sooner than later), so, if you are interested in them, be sure to snag one while you can. I’m sure they’ll go pretty fast once the building is complete; I know I would certainly try to snag one if I were over there!
