Breaking News: Another Big Earthquake Hits Haiti
Posted by Arkisaeo in sustainable living, Uncategorized, 20 Jan 2010
Earthquakes seem to be all the rage in Haiti this month.
Little over a week ago, a 7.0 earthquake killed 200,000, wounded at least 250,000, and left 1.5 million without homes. Now, after more than 40 aftershocks, another quake attacks the small island—and this time it’s a 6.1. The previous earthquake wreaked most of its havoc throughout Port-au-Prince. This latest one, which occurred in the early dawn hours of today, was centered approximately 35 miles (60 km) northwest of the city.
The extent of damage, death or injuries from today’s earthquake is still unknown.

Oil Sheen Pollution has a New Arch-Nemesis: Microbubbles!
There have been a couple nasty oil spills lately, including in the Timor Sea and San Francisco Bay Area. Anyone who has ever seen the impact of these unfortunate events knows the harm it can cause to the environment and the animals that may be in the area at the time. One of the biggest problems of an oil spill is figuring out how to clean it up and deal with all that polluted water. The sheen alone (that shiny...
GLOBAL CAP AND TRADE
‘We believe that a global cap and trade system is the best mechanism to achieve substantial greenhouse gas reductions and to provide businesses and clean technology innovators with financial incentives to take the lead.’ – Nigel Sheinwald, U.K. ambassador to the U.S, lecture from July 31, 2009 A global cap and trade system, similar to arrangements already used in the European Union and soon within the United States, would be a mechanism that treats the problem of climate change caused by...
Containment dome lowered in effort to stop Gulf oil leak
The latest effort to staunch the flow of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico – caused by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oilrig – is the lowering of a 5 storey-high containment dome over the leak. The lengthy operation began last night with the eventual hope that the dome would cut the amount of oil spilling into the sea by 85%. From an article in the Guardian that also features a video explaining the mechanics of the dome or...
Breaking News: 7.2 Earthquake Hits Baja California, Mexico
A 7.2 earthquake hit Baja, California, Mexico less than 2 hours ago, about 19 miles southeast of Mexicali. Originally, the quake was measured as a 6.9 but seismologists have raised the preliminary magnitude level since (though it’s still an estimate at this point either way). The quake was felt in a number of areas, including Arizona, Tijuana, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. There are no reports of any deaths or injuries yet. Fortunately, damage thus far has only consisted of...
Fool me once: Rachel Maddow on credibility of govt info on Gulf oil spill
As estimates of the oil spilling from the busted well in the Gulf of Mexico shot up like a post-Perestroika stock market on an almost daily basis, so plummeted the credibility of BP and the US government’s estimates regarding the volume of leaking oil. Accuracy apparently is not their strong suit. Won’t get fooled again. Or will we? What choice do we have without our own personal oil spill experts replete with super submarines? Even James Cameron wasn’t allowed to look –...

He is also on the board of trustees at the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) in Washington, DC. Many believe, including Tony, that his partner was murdered for his work in their organization, the Law of Nature Foundation. In the two hectares...
‘O No, Canada!’ – Alberta’s Oil Sands
And we thought you were so Green… apparently, not so much. The Alberta Oil Sands or “Tar Sands” are the world’s largest deposits of bitumen, a heavy, black form of crude oil, which can be extracted via surface mining. Thanks to 2003-2007’s record high oil prices, the sands became more commercially viable than ever. Northeastern Alberta is home to 140,000 square kilometers of oil sands, an area larger than England. Oil sand extraction is widely considered to be of more harm...
UN statistics highlight India’s shocking sanitation conditions
Far more people in India have access to a mobile phone than to a toilet, according to a United Nations study on how to improve sanitation levels globally. –Al Jazeera English Development and economic growth are huge priorities for India's government, but according to an Al Jazeera English report, only one third of India's nearly 1.2 billion inhabitants have access to proper sanitation. This is a serious health hazard for the 'world's largest democracy' – especially for young children – and calls...
US: The oil continues to flow
The spill in the Gulf of Mexico is now estimated to be the largest in US history, at '12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day' according to a New York Times article. This estimate is 2 to 5 times higher than previous figures. Needless to say, this is bad news for everyone. The price tag for the BP has reached $1bn and little progress is being made on stopping the leak. President Obama has promised that BP will be held fully accountable...
Shipping Containers: The Homes of the Future
For years, shipping containers have been used to send a variety of items via train, boat and aircraft. But now, more and more people are beginning to see them as a living and design space, rather than as a mere cargo holding box. The most recent prototype is being introduced in Buenos Aires, Brazil, at the Casa FOA Exhibition. This latest shipping container home comes with 4 “rooms” plus a roof terrace. A couple of the rooms even include secret features,...
