Rhode Island Sized Ice Chunk Breaks off Antarctica
Posted by Arkisaeo in Climate Change, Science & Technology, 19 Jan 2010
Ice. Oh, the many uses and happenings that involve ice. It keeps your drinks cold. It’s a pain to deal with in winter. It’s been known to put holes in ships and has quite the alarming melt factor as of late.
The biggest news happened down at Antarctica. Apparently, a chunk of ice bigger than the size of Rhode Island broke away from Antarctica and then shattered into even more pieces. If you don’t know your US states or geography, Rhode Island is the smallest state. Some people compare this to the size of Yosemite National Park.
The event was captured at the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf by NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites. Read more…

UK govt backtracks on forest sell-off
A backlash against the UK government’s plans to privatize vast amounts of national forest has resulted in a softening of language concerning the proposed measure by the ruling Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. Part of the austerity measures of “greenest government ever”, the plan has sparked a widespread public outcry. The selling off of 258,000 hectares of Britain’s publicly owned woodland is now being presented by the government as an option that is being considered, rather than a done deal. UK Environment Secretary Caroline...
Oil from Chinese Vessel Found at North West Island Nature Sanctuary
There is always a dark cloud hiding somewhere behind every silver lining and unfortunately, this also applies to the recent Great Barrier Reef incident. Although the Chinese vessel was refloated and towed away from the shoal, some oil from the spill still washed up at the well-known North West Island nature sanctuary. This particular sanctuary is a breeding site for hundreds of thousands of seabirds and turtles. Many feared for the safety, health and well-being of these animals on the island,...
British court equates Green beliefs with religion
Tim Nicholson says that he was dismissed from Grainger plc – the U.K.'s largest residential property landlord – because of his environmental beliefs. Nicholson took his former employer to court in Oxford, U.K. under the Employment Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulations 2003. The judge, Mr. Justice Michael Burton, found in favor of Mr. Nicholson, stating: 'If a person can establish that he holds a philosophical belief which is based on science as opposed, for example, to religion, then there is no...
Climate conference highlights health and security
A series on meetings entitled ‘The Health and Security Perspectives of Climate Change – How to secure our future wellbeing’ was held yesterday in London at the headquarters of the British Medical Association. The view put forth by both human health and military experts at the conference is that climate change is the biggest current threat to both public health and security. Climate change is driving mass migration and resource depletion, both of which can cause and exacerbate armed conflict, as...

Ecuador: Between China and a hard place
pic: Aperture (Wikimedia Commons) A provider of sanctuary to WikiLeaks founder and champion of transparency Julian Assange and staunch ally of the recently bereaved Venezuela, Ecuador has been punching above its weight of late. In terms of international relations, that is. Ecologically speaking, Ecuador is a bonafide heavyweight. According to Conservation International, it is one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries, with the highest density of biodiversity per km on Earth. The Galápagos Islands alone should cement the nation's global environmental...
U.S. eco news: Al Gore speaks about American political opposition to climate change action
Climate change skeptics are not unique to the United States, but they do seem to find more receptive ears on their home turf. Mr. Gore also gave his views on the domestic expansion of nuclear power, subsidies and nuclear weapons proliferation. The Rachel Maddow Show: 'Al Gore on U.S....
