Rhode Island Sized Ice Chunk Breaks off Antarctica
Posted by Arkisaeo in Climate Change, Science & Technology, 19 Jan 2010
Ice. Oh, the many uses and happenings that involve ice. It keeps your drinks cold. It’s a pain to deal with in winter. It’s been known to put holes in ships and has quite the alarming melt factor as of late.
The biggest news happened down at Antarctica. Apparently, a chunk of ice bigger than the size of Rhode Island broke away from Antarctica and then shattered into even more pieces. If you don’t know your US states or geography, Rhode Island is the smallest state. Some people compare this to the size of Yosemite National Park.
The event was captured at the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf by NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites. Read more…

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Numerous environment-related programs are being implemented by non-profit organizations, private corporations involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), government agencies, and concerned individuals. Among these efforts include educating the public about the science of climate change; its effects to the environment and human lives; and how to reduce carbon footprint. With the proliferation of information about climate change, carbon dioxide emissions, carbon footprint, etc., many have a more or less concrete idea of what is happening to Mother Earth, and who and...
Catalonia bans bullfighting – The rest of Spain should follow suit
The autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain has banned bullfighting by a vote of 68 to 55 with 9 abstentions in the Catalonian parliament. The vote was brought on by a petition organized by the animal rights campaign Prou! (‘Enough!’) and signed by 180,000 people, who believe the practice to be barbaric and outmoded, though there may have also been a bit of Catalonian nationalism involved. From a BBC News report: But while the official debate is over animal rights, many believe this...
Obama admin approves first offshore wind farm in US
The Cape Wind project – planned to be located in the Nantucket Sound off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the United States – was given the go-ahead on Wednesday by the US government. From an article in the New York Times: Developers say that Cape Wind will provide 75 percent of the power for Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard — the equivalent of that produced by a medium-size coal-fired plant. It would also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by the...
The promise of bike sharing to Reduce Emissions
Bike sharing sure has come a long way since the failed Yellow Bike Project of 1994 in Portland, Oregon. With the launchof New York City’s first system next spring coinciding with similar plans in other cities, it appears that bikes and bike stations may become as widespread and popular as they are in Canada and throughout Europe. The concept of designating a certain number of bikes for unrestricted use has many economical and environmental advantages. It should come as no surprise...
Wearable Art: Colour-In Dress
Many people dream of designing their own clothes but lack the skills or the means to do so. But don't give up just yet, designers Berber Soepboer and Michiel Schuurman have come up with a fitted A-line dress with black-and-white print that you can color and personalize using textile markers. Everyone can interpret it the way they like best which makes each dress unique. When a garment is designed—even partially—by the wearer, it is valued, cared for and is less likely...
World’s Largest Douglas Fir Tree may be in Danger
Over the last few weeks, Vancouver was home to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Polar Bear campaigns, LEED certified venues, and e-waste medals were reported in the news, along with quite the number of victories and tragedies that happened this year. Even though the Olympics have finally come to an end, it does not mean that Vancouver’s environmental troubles are over. One particular tree is a prime example of this. If you’ve ever been to Vancouver Island, you may have been...
Global Warming Bites!
It’s a good guess that most people do not sit down with the latest scientific paper or magazine and read about the effects of global warming over afternoon tea. If we did, we may need something stronger than tea! After all, the words Global Warming is akin to Bigfoot for most people – they have a vague impression that it’s big, scary and may or may not exist in reality. Unfortunately, that’s where the similarity ends. No movies have been made...
The Eco-Dentistry Association: making sure your teeth stay green
By the time you’re scheduling your next dental visit, you’ve probably given your full attention to making it look like you’ve been flossing daily for the last 6 months. But while you’re trying to clean up your act, have you ever wondered what your dentist is doing to clean up theirs? The Eco-Dentistry Association, an international organization that educates dental practitioners and patients about the benefits of green dentistry, identifies four key sources of waste in the dental practice: Conventional x-rays—patients recognize...
Create an Eco-Plane, Win $1.5 million!
Whoever said a “green” flight would never be possible, clearly underestimated the power of NASA. That’s right; NASA is sponsoring a competition which will be run by their light-aircraft collaborator organization: the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation. Known as the CAFE Green Flight Challenge, this competition will pit green aircraft designers against one another to come up with low-carbon flying machines. Participants have until July 2011, in which their completed aircrafts will be assessed and tested in flight trials at...
Ady Gil Captain Faces Arrest in Japan
Two months ago, the Ady Gil was rammed, severed in half, and destroyed. About a month ago, Captain Pete Bethune of the Ady Gil, jumped aboard the Shonan Maru #2, with the intentions of handing over a bill for the cost of his ship plus making a citizen’s arrest of the Shonan Maru #2’s captain. However, the attempt was futile and resulted in Captain Bethune being held captive aboard the Japanese ship. Now, the Shonan Maru #2 is moving ever closer to...
