PETA’s New Anti-Fur Ad may Come with a Price
Posted by Arkisaeo in Uncategorized, 6 Jan 2010

PETA has been making headlines a lot this week and so far it hasn’t been for good reasons.
First, they’ve been taken to court over a dispute with US Global Exotics—a company that specializes in the worldwide delivery of exotic animals.
Now, they may have one upset First Lady on their hands. Why? PETA used an image of Michelle Obama in their latest anti-fur ad—without her permission.
Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, claims that her organization would not have sought Obama’s consent for the ad because it knows that she can’t make such an endorsement. Apparently, they included Obama’s image in the ad simply because of a White House confirmation that she does not wear fur.
Thus far, the anti-fur ads have appeared in Washington’s Metro stations, magazines and on PETA’s website. Along with Mrs. Obama, they also feature Oprah Winfrey, Carrie Underwood and Tyra Banks.
Do you think it’s right for PETA—or any organization—to use someone’s image for their ads without that person’s permission? Why or why not? Post your thoughts and comments below.

UK: emissions up, biofuels a disappointment
The UK’s chief environmental scientist has stated that Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions have actually increased in the last 20 years due to ‘hidden’ emissions in imported goods. Since last year, China has been labeled the number one emitter of greenhouse gases, though it is the West that fuels much of China’s emissions by importing so much from the rapidly developing Asian super power. From a report in the Guardian: Speaking in a documentary to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 next week, Professor...

People have been making their way to higher ground in some areas and at least 3 aftershocks have occurred since. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no immediate threat of a destructive, widespread tsunami....
Alligator Monogamy Surprises Scientists
For years, it was believed that alligators were promiscuous and not all that interested in life or long-term partnerships. Luckily, beliefs and theories can be disproven, and they have been once again. A study that was conducted in the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana showed that 70% of the female American alligators chose to stay with their partner for long periods of time. The findings of this 10 year study shocked scientists, since the large reptiles live in such populated areas...

European Space Agency launches satellites to assess climate change impact on Earth’s water systems
On Monday, November 2nd, two satellites were launched into orbit by the ESA or European Space Agency in order to give an overall view of the Earth's water systems and their patterns. Named the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Proba-2, the satellites blasted off from Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia. SMOS's mission is the measuring of 'water retention capacity in soil to help forecast drought and flood risk and calculate the planet's carbon cycle to determine the amount...
India Aid Workers Struggle to Help Cyclone Victims
A tornado that ripped through part of India last week killed at least 131 people and made any attempt of aid a real trying task. Aid and rescue workers had to make their way through uprooted trees and downed power lines blocking roads to provide food and shelter to the hundreds of thousands of victims left homeless by the storm. In West Bengal state alone, at least 250,000 people became homeless, thanks to the cyclone. Srikumar Mukherji, minister for civil defense...

Gulf oil spill: Claims of positive spin as BP works to seal well
Yesterday and today BP crews are attempting to securely seal the leak on the blown out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico by pumping in cement. Operation ‘static kill’ has so far been successful in halting the flow of oil into the Gulf, which began on April 20th with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform. The latest effort began with BP crews pumping in special mud to stop the leak and will hopefully conclude – after the cement...
GLOBAL CAP AND TRADE
‘We believe that a global cap and trade system is the best mechanism to achieve substantial greenhouse gas reductions and to provide businesses and clean technology innovators with financial incentives to take the lead.’ – Nigel Sheinwald, U.K. ambassador to the U.S, lecture from July 31, 2009 A global cap and trade system, similar to arrangements already used in the European Union and soon within the United States, would be a mechanism that treats the problem of climate change caused by...
France 24 Environment explores various mechanisms for reducing carbon emissions
French news channel France 24 looks into ways to cut CO2, including carbon markets, 'cap and trade', carbon offset schemes and REDD, as well as some pitfalls or complications associated with them. Of note are a methane extraction system in China, criticisms from Greenpeace about loopholes in the carbon credit system and a community in the Brazilian Amazon transformed by a rain forest bursary. Are schemes like REDD legitimate and effective ways of cutting carbon emissions, or do they do...

More recent coverage on this “incident” shows that those in the White House are not particularly happy with the use of Michelle’s image.
The argument seems to go that PETA wanted to use an image of Mrs. Obama because she once stated that she does not wear fur, and they wanted to praise her for that.
While this is very nice and all, those in the White House, particularly Michelle’s spokesperson, stand by the fact that PETA used her image without consent or permission. Michelle–and others in the house–are not able to fund, promote or endorse certain campaigns. PETA knows this, though the use of her image might be suggesting that she is promoting their campaign.
Another thing to note is that the rest of the women in the picture (Oprah, Underwood and Banks) are all on record as publicly endorsing PETA’s anti-fur campaigns. PETA also claims that by Michelle simply stating that she does not wear fur gives them enough license to use her image.
I think that if they were aware that Michell Obama could not officially promote their campaign or consent to being used in part of it, they should not have used her image.
If they went to the trouble of getting permission from the other 3 women, they should have also sought out permission from a 4th, instead of using one from someone they knew would not be allowed to partake in such things.
There is a legal point of interest concerning any image made by the government in that it becomes public domain. So legally, if the photo is from a government agency (and there must be plenty of Michelle Obama pictures that are public domain) apparently anyone can use it. Just look at all the Barack Obama pictures out there. The PETA add is pretty tame and doesn’t make any serious claims. It’s also not for profit, which distinguishes it from another example: when Ryan Air used an image of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni in their ads without permission. They were fined 60,000€ of which only 1€ went to Sarkozy.
l guess the question is does michelle o just not like wearing fur, or does she oppose fur fashion and anyone else wearing it. If she opposes it, whether president or pauper we should have the right and courage to say we do.
l guess peta is not actually saying these women are anti fur politically, but are fab without wearing it, but maybe theyre suggesting it. Shouldn`t be a major problem, just a need for peta to state, michelle o is not making a political statement, but personally chooses not to wear fur.
