Egyptian eco stories: biogas from kitchen scraps and environmentally friendly housing for the poor
Posted by Graham_Land in Sustainable living, sustainable living, Videos & Documentaries, 6 Jan 2010
In a poor area of Cairo, Egypt, where ‘almost everything’ is reused and recycled, CNN visits one man’s home that is powered by gas from fermented kitchen waste. The biogas unit – which also provides fertilizer – as well as a solar water heating system, were both built by the man himself. He is obviously as skillful as he is dedicated to self-sufficiency. Check out this inspiring report from CNN:
CNN Eco Solutions – Making gas from garbage
In a related bit of news, here is a CNN Eco Solutions report on a building project in Egypt which constructs efficient, environmentally friendly and inexpensive housing for the city’s poor.

Copenhagen 2009: The Climate Change Event of the Year
The fashion industry has Fashion Week, the movie industry has the Oscars and Cannes and musicians have the Grammys and MTV Music Awards. For the green community, it seems the place to be this year is The United Nations Copenhagen Climate Summit in Denmark, set to begin on December 7 and will conclude on December 18. Everyone is a-buzz about this upcoming gathering and many environmental groups are urging their local governments to participate or get their agendas on the...
CRU Chief Scientist Phil Jones to Temporarily Step Down
A couple weeks ago, the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) e-mail system was hacked into and thousands of e-mails were publicly posted online. Many of these e-mails were hand-picked because they hint at possible manipulation of climate change data. One of the main targets in the e-mails is chief scientist, Phil Jones. Skeptics claim that the usage of the words “trick” and “to hide the decline” is proof that he is responsible for promoting false information. However, Jones claims that the...
Check Out San Francisco’s Urban Forest Map Project!
Amber Bieg is on a mission: to account for every single tree in San Francisco. It all started 5 years ago when Bieg was planting trees in the North Beach area of San Francisco. She realized that “it was really inefficient for one individual, or even a group, to go out with GPS units and survey trees”. So, she started on a plan to get the whole community involved. Bieg partnered up with ecologist, Kelaine Vargas, and the Urban Forest Map...
The latest on green livable places
For the second year in a row, Germany has bested its other competitors to take home the top prize for the annual Solar Decathlon competition. The week-long competition has bought many innovative ideas on eco-friendly houses in focus. The winning entry from Germany was a cube shaped solar-powered home dubbed as “Net Zero”. The interior layout was designed for maximum energy efficiency, omitting walls to give way for zoned areas. It utilized single-crystal silicon panels on the roof and thin-film copper...
Adriatic loggerhead turtles endangered by plastic debris in the Adriatic Sea
Researchers studying the impact and consequences of plastic debris in the sea found that one out of three loggerhead turtles in the Adriatic Sea has plastic in their bodies. To reach this conclusion the scientists studied the bodies of stranded dead turtles or turtles caught by accident by fishing. Studies about plastic debris in the oceans and their impact on marine life have been going on for a long time. Although there is currently no scientific consensus about the impact of...
Fire Destroys World’s Largest Collection of Dead Snakes, Scorpions and Spiders
Some people want their work to be remembered and shared with the rest of the world for centuries to come; in many cases this involves going down in a blaze of glory (so to speak). Unfortunately, sometimes that blaze is real and will consume all those years of work. A fire destroyed the world’s largest scientific collection of dead snakes, scorpions and spiders. The collection, located at the Instituto Butantan in Brazil, was almost a century-old and included nearly 80,000 snakes...
A Dangerous Thing may be Lurking in Your Own Backyard
There is something that happens in many rural areas around the globe. It’s a fairly common thing and it can also be a fairly dangerous thing, both to your health and to the environment. What am I referring to? Backyard Trash Burning. Yes, in many rural areas—small towns or out in the country—people will burn their trash. Typically, the trash is burned in a burning barrel (usually a 55 gallon metal drum), though some will also burn their garbage in boxes,...
European e-waste must be recycled
Minerals used in electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptops are becoming increasingly scarce. Despite this, large quantities are thrown into landfills when such high-tech products are considered obsolete, something that unfortunately occurs with increasing frequency (see Moore’s Law). The European Parliament is proposing stricter standards for the recycling of e-waste. From a Deutsche Welle report: The Parliament wants member countries to be collecting at least 85 percent of electronic waste by 2016. Depending on the type of device, it wants a...
A Study on Snails: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
When time (or anything else) seems to pass by at an extremely slow rate, you may hear someone comment that they just saw a stampede of snails pass them by. These little creatures may be slow and non-threatening, but they have come a long way and now, scientists are suggesting that their slowness may actually cause them to split into different species more rapidly. Apparently, when different populations of certain species stop mating with each other, they’ll begin to split into...
Whole Foods Creates New Healthy Employee Incentive Program
A number of you may be familiar with the Whole Foods Market chain; perhaps you even shop or work there. If you’ve never heard of them, they are a grocery store that specializes in “natural” and organic products including: pet products, baked goods, national brands, meat, produce, and more. Recently, the Texas-based chain decided to issue a new incentive for their workers: The Team Member Healthy Discount Incentive Program. This program basically states that the healthier you are, the higher your...
