Greenhouse Gases Endanger Human Health
Posted by Murielle in sustainable living, 12 Dec 2009
According to a recent announcement made by the EPA, greenhouse gases do, indeed, have a negative effect on human health.
We already know the fumes from fossil fuels and the like can cause problems, ranging from asthma to migraines. Now, the EPA is pushing the fact that CO2 and other such pollutants should be regulated under the Clean Air Act. It’s a good thing they made this finding, too. According to a Supreme Court ruling, the EPA was required to find that CO2 and 5 other greenhouse gases are definitely an endangerment to human health before they were allowed to proceed on regulating them under the Clean Air Act. These greenhouse gases come from very common things: cars, factories and power plants—all of which many people are exposed to on a daily basis.
At a news conference, EPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, said:
“These long-overdue findings cement 2009’s place in history as the year when the United States government began addressing the challenge of greenhouse-gas pollution.”
It sure took them long enough to do so. Read More…

Surf eco-friendly!
As the sport of surfing grows, so does its environmental impact. Surfing equipment made of non-biodegradable materials such as synthetic resin surfboards, neoprene wetsuits and petroleum-based surf wax are just some of the products used by surfers that can have a negative ecological footprint. Environmentally conscious surfing companies such as Envirosurfer are attempting to address some of the ecological issues with surfing products and offer green alternatives. For example, wooden or epoxy boards, as well as surfboards made with bamboo-based resin,...
Alaska allows aerial shooting of grizzlies
Alaska’s main animal predators are now at risk of being shot from helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. It is already legal to bait and snare bears in Alaska, a practice even some hunting advocates find inhumane. In order to increase the hunting of caribou and moose in the state, Alaska’s Board of Game has lifted a ban on the aerial shooting of grizzly bears, a threatened species in most US states. State wildlife officials may now cull grizzlies by shooting them Sarah...
No Money Man can win my love
Back in November we featured a piece on a 'freeconomist' conducting an idealistic experiment in living off the grid in a rural part of western England. 80's pop lyric references aside, Mark Boyle, aka No Money Man has completed a year without using money. Fourteen months from starting his experiment and in the middle of a snowy cold snap, he's still wearing shorts, brushing his teeth with cuttlefish bones and for the time being plans on continuing his low-impact lifestyle....
Nifty Ways for Kids to Experiment with the Weather
I am absolutely sick of winter. This season is perhaps the most dreary and dismal of them all. Sure, some areas have spectacular views with their glaciers, icebergs, or quaint snow-covered cottages by a lake; but most of us aren’t so fortunate. Most of us have to deal with icy roads, shoveling sidewalks, or trudging through plowed slush. Melting snow leads to muddy yards and all that white landscape against grey skies really loses its appeal after a while. Personally, I...
Bolivia, climate change and the future of electric cars
Just recently, during the latest climate talks in Cancun, Bolivia took a stand and accused the developed nations of genocide for the country’s 300.000 yearly deaths as a result of droughts, floods, desertification, storms and rising sea levels caused by greenhouse gas emissions since the Industrial Revolution. Bolivia is paying a high toll for worldwide climate change. Fresh water supplies are shrinking as glaciers are melting while flooding and storms leave thousands of people homeless and with no access to basic...
Brits are consuming less stuff
How about a spot of good news for once? According to environment writer and UK Green Party Candidate Chris Goodall, people in the UK probably consume fewer resources and produce less waste than at any time since records began. This means Britons are progressively using less food, fuel, goods, etc. – in short: less ‘stuff’. The amount of stuff consumed in the UK per person, per year, began to be tallied in 1970 and consumption peaked in 2001 before it started declining....
Aftermath of deadly storms in US: 31 dead, $1 billion in damage
Flooding from severe storms in the US states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi resulted in death and destruction last weekend. Tennessee was hardest hit, with the country music capital of Nashville receiving the most media attention. From an Associated Press report: Nashville, where the Grand Ole Opry flooded along with parts of the downtown, has been the focus since weekend storms killed at least 30 people in three states, 20 of them in Tennessee. But the record-shattering torrential rains that pushed the Cumberland...
Discover Inspiring Recycled Art and Ideas Through Recyclart!
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. We all know of the 3-R mantra by now. Some people live by it almost religiously. Most of us, however, will reduce and recycle, but we seem to skip that reuse step quite often. We see items as trash or junk and usually treat them as such. Instead of being reincarnated into some useful second life, things end up occupying landfills instead. If you want to take a stab at the reuse step—or if you already take...
Beyond recycling – ‘zero waste’
A new environmental trend in North American establishments seeks to do away with trash all together. The concept is called ‘zero waste’ and it’s catching on in schools, restaurants, parks and businesses. Though the zero waste concept may sound like an idealistic goal, it signifies just how serious some people and organizations are starting to take environmental concerns, through increased composting, recycling and decreased usage of non recyclable or non biodegradable products. This new standard of ecological awareness and ideology...
