“Please help the world” – Copenhagen opening film

The UNFCCC opened on December 7th, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark with a moving four minute film featuring a girl who has a nightmare about natural disasters brought on by climate change. “We have made a film which speaks to the heart rather than to the brain,” says the Danish director of the film Mikkel Blaabjerg Poulsen (from the COP15 blog).
Watch the film below and see what you think – or feel – for yourself. I dare you not to get a little misty-eyed.
“Please Help the World”, film from the opening ceremony of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 (COP15) in Copenhagen from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Shown on December 7, 2009 at COP15.

Debate continues to rage in Spain after Catalonia’s bullfighting ban
The Catalan parliament recently voted to ban bullfighting, a decision scheduled to go into effect in 2012. At the first bullfighting event in Barcelona since the ban, the industry and its supporters were out in full force to protest the ban and assert their ‘right’ to tease, abuse and stab young bulls to death for the amusement of the crowd. A manifesto by the group La Mesa del Toro was to be read out at all bullfighting events in Spain, France...
Copenhagen Becomes First Scandinavian City with a Mandatory Green Roof Policy
Last year’s COP-15 event may have achieved “epic fail” status, but that’s certainly not going to stop the former host city—Copenhagen, Denmark—from pushing their green standards a bit further. Copenhagen is now the first Scandinavian city to put a mandatory green roof policy into action. The new policy requires vegetation and soil to be a mandatory part in architectural planning; in particular, it covers all roofs with a slope less than 30 degrees, plus the refurbishment of older roofs. By putting...
Japan: Convention on Biological Diversity to discuss the future of plants
In terms of conservation, plants do not receive as much attention as cute cuddly animals like pandas or polar bears. Let’s face it – they don’t even rank up there with giant salamanders. But plants provide food for all living things and are essential to life on Earth. The untapped medicinal and technological resources in plant life around the world are unknown but potentially invaluable. Therefore preserving plant species and maintaining botanical biodiversity is an important, if often overlooked, issue. One fifth...
Update: Mile-Long Oil Slick Sighted Near Latest Oil Rig Explosion
Earlier today, a helicopter spotted another oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The 13 people on board did escape, though one was injured. Now, there's a mile-long oil slick and it's still growing. The oil slick is at least 100 feet wide and was spotted near the rig, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy Inc. At least 3 firefighting vessels have been deployed to deal with the ongoing fire. According to a statement from the company: "Mariner has notified...
Hopes for climate justice in Durban?
COP 17 updates, anyone? Anyone care about the future of the climate, planet Earth or its human and non-human inhabitants? No? Well neither do your leaders, apparently. Wo what are they doing there, anyway? One aspect of the climate summit in Durban, South Africa seems to be various large polluting countries balking at committing to reduce emissions unless every other country does. This effectively means that none of them really want to. Not enough to take a stand. Make no mistake: the rule...
Vertical farming: Just crazy or so crazy it just might work?
In Monday’s Guardian George Monbiot slams the concept of ‘vertical farming’ in a piece, entitled ‘Greens living in ivory towers now want to farm them too’. His main beef is that a Columbia University parasitologist named Dickson Despommier has been getting a lot of support in the green media for his idea to create skyscraper farms in densely populated urban areas like New York City, which might be a brilliant idea, but it’s a fanciful one as well. This immediately reminded me...
119 Killed, Thousands Homeless from Indian Tornado; Victims had No Warning
A rare event happened in India yesterday. A tornado—with winds in excess of 100 mph (160 kph)—tore through the northeastern part of the country, injuring hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. At least 119 people were killed during the storm. Rescue workers have been busy distributing rice, dried fruit, and water to the cyclone victims. Tarpaulins were also passed out to the people who lost their homes for building temporary shelters. Hundreds of uprooted trees and electricity poles have also been...
Get a birds eye view of a White-tailed Eagle Family, live!
White-tailed Eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. It weighs up to 6 kilograms, with a 2.5 metre wingspan. "During the period 1800-1970, White-tailed Eagles in most of Europe, underwent dramatic declines, and became extinct in many regions of Western, central, and Southern Europe. While Norway, Germany, Poland, and Iceland harboured the largest surviving populations, pockets of reproducing pairs remained in several other countries" - according to Wikipedia. The White-Tailed Eagle (Polish: Bielik, plural Bieliki) is considered...
Retail Giant Brings the Future of Sustainable Shopping
Wal-Mart has been placed at both ends of the spectrum over the years; a business that has been the receiver of both praise and contempt, and still it keeps pushing the envelope and tearing into its rivals like nobody’s business. Their most recent pursuits have involved going green, or at least greener. Wal-Mart President, Lee Scott has stated that the company’s environmental goals include: “1. To be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy. 2. To create zero waste. 3. To sell products that...
Greenpeace: Major brands linked to river pollution in China
Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas, Puma, Calvin Klein, Converse, Cortefiel, H&M and Lacoste are among the global megabrands named in a new Greenpeace report on hazardous river pollution by the garment industry in China. Since 1995 China has been the world’s largest exporter of textiles, attracting Western and Japanese brands to manufacture there due to cheap labor and lax regulations. Even when major international brands have self-imposed regulations on how their garments are produced, such rules are harder to monitor when outsourced...
