Whenever people move or relocate to new places, they take with them a piece of their own culture and heritage. This is especially true when it comes to food preferences and eating habits since food is seen as a sign of cultural identity.
Urban areas populated by different nationalities with different cultural backgrounds now have the option of growing their own herbs and vegetables using movable suitcases filled with soil, these contraption called ‘UrbanBuds’ is the brainchild of Gionata Gatto, an Italian designer based in the Netherlands. As many as thirty-six plants can be grown vertically along the fabric. Read more about the UrbanBuds here

Rio de Janeiro’s Proposed Wall: Eco Barrier or Slum Cover Up?
While many groups are lauding Rio de Janeiro’s efforts to save the Atlantic Forest from destruction, by erecting “eco-barriers” in the city. The over 10-foot barriers to be erected are supposed to solve the problem of urban sprawl – preventing further devastation to over 20,000 species of plants and animals who call the forest home. But critics are questioning the real motives behind building these so-called “eco-barriers” in the city – is it to protect the environment or the cover...
Addressing plastic pollution: Less is best
In the light of plastic pollution, it is disturbing to find how it poses as a rising threat to our oceans. During the convention of the Strategic Council on Plastic Pollution, marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols shared that plastic and its remains can already be found in the stomach of sea turtles, birds and fish all over the world. Toxic substances from plastic debris that permeate our food chain are tantamount to slowly ingesting poison. Effects of unrestrained consumerism are...
Don’t Expect a Global Treaty on Climate Change This Year
Well, it seems one of our worst environment fears has been confirmed. A climate change treaty will most likely not happen this year. According to UN climate chief, Yvo de Boer, there is not enough time to recover from December’s disappointing summit. He believes more time is needed to establish a framework, as well as financial and climate change aid that is capable of convincing developing countries to even support a deal. He also noted that the focus should shift towards...
IWC’s Latest Whaling Proposal Vexes All Sides
The IWC definitely has its hands full with the whole whaling issue. Unfortunately for them, they can’t seem to make anyone happy. If they completely eliminate whaling altogether, the environmentalists will be happy, but the whalers won’t be. If they allow more whaling (but under stricter limits), neither the environmentalists nor the whalers will be happy. What, exactly, are they to do? Their current proposal would allow Iceland, Japan and Norway to hunt whales for 10 years, but under stricter limits...

NASA’s GRACE Satellites and the Loss of California’s Water Supply
California is melting!—or at least rapidly drying out. We all know of the melting problems in Greenland, Antarctica, the Swiss Alps and Himalayas. We also know that sea levels are rising and places like Africa and India are facing some heavy water losses. Now, it has been brought to attention that the US state of California has lost nearly 30 cubic kilometers (7.2 cubic miles) of fresh water since 2003. This would be the equivalent of 12 million Olympic-sized swimming pools—7.9...
Europe not despairing: Cancun is step forward towards a worldwide climate treaty – with or without the U.S.
European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard spoke during the opening day of the COP16 Climate talks in Cancun, Mexico yesterday. According to her the Cancun conference could be an important step towards a worldwide climate treaty, even if other nations like the U.S. are still not ready to play ball. It is very clear that the legally-binding deal that the EU was ready for last year and that we are still ready for will, unfortunately, not be the outcome of...
Deepwater deputizin’ – BP out of Arctic, Cairn Energy in
Poor BP. After the Deepwater Horizon mishap they have been tarred by their own brush, so to speak. But lets face it, despite BP’s exceptionally bad safety record, it’s a bad brush all around; whether you’re a pelican in the Gulf of Mexico or a person living beside Alberta’s tar sands or in the Niger River Delta. Of course BP has the well-deserved worst rap at this point in time and so they won’t be able to share in the spoils of...
Wild boars run amok in Germany
Are wild boars in Germany too much of a match for farmers and even hunters that the German military must be brought in to deal with the porcine problem? German hunting groups are dismissive of the idea, proposed by farmers. Sure, they like to shoot and eat the boars – they shot nearly 450,000 last year alone – but they don’t want to ‘wage war’ on the poor beasts. From an AFP article: The call for a military response comes from landowners in...
