Canadian firm, Saltworks Technologies has revealed a new energy-efficient desalination procedure, which utilizes solar heat. This new approach is said to reduce the electrical energy required for desalination by over 70 percent, as opposed to the traditional reverse osmosis technique.

The desalination process involves converting solar energy to osmotic energy where concentrated salt water is then exposed to two separate solutions, one porous to chloride ions, while the second is porous only to sodium ions. Using this system, 1kWh of electric energy can produce 1m3 of desalinated water. Capital cost may also be reduced because plastic pipes can also be used in lieu of steel pipes, since this method does not use pressure.

The firm has won an award in British Columbia last May 2009 for this technological breakthrough. Read the full article here
