Giant snail diet to combat malnutrition in Africa

Developing nations across the African continent still continue to face issues of rampant malnutrition. To address this pressing concern, a Nigerian nutritionist has found a possible solution to improve extremely poor diets.
A study was conducted by Ukpong Udofia of University of Uyo on the nutritional content of the African Giant Snail. Rich in protein, iron, calcium, zinc and many other essential vitamins, the health benefits of the snail meat is found to be comparable to beef. During a taste test administered by Udofia, an overwhelming number of people prefer Giant Snail Pies over Beef Pies in terms of appearance, texture and flavor.
Because it is cheaper, more nutritious and has a large supply, it will be easier to address malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies in many communities throughout Africa.
It’s an ingenious solution, and one that’s better for the environment as well. In many places there are already too many giant snails, and in others, efforts to cultivate them have been successful. Giant snails consume far less water and fewer resources than cows and other sources of protein, making them efficient to raise. Read the full article here
