Breaking News: Greenhouse Gases Reach Record Level
In an alarming statement from the World Meteorological Organization, the world’s greenhouse gas emissions have reached a record level—something that hasn’t happened since the pre-industrial era.
According to the statement, atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased 38% since 1750; which contributes to more than 63% of the increase in the greenhouse effect. Last year, CO2 levels reached 385.2 ppm (parts per million), which is a 2.0 increase from previous years.
“It’s not really good news: concentration of greenhouse gases continue to increase, actually even a bit faster,” said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud. “This is reinforcing the fact that we are actually closer to the pessimistic scenario. Action must be taken as soon as possible.”
