This Week’s Eco-Gadgets: Lights, Chargers and Jewelry
Once again, more nifty eco-gadgets are being created. Some of them are prototypes, while others are already on the market. This week’s little group includes living jewelry, human-powered lights, and a multi-functional solar charger; plus a lot more. Check them out:
Lights
- A very simple, yet decadent choice would be the first eco-invention listed. Created by the Slovenian group Zek, these lights are made from recycled spray paint cans. They were also part of the 25 lights exhibit at the Galerija Vzigalica for the annual Light Guerrilla competition.

- However, if you’re looking for something a bit more “hands-on”, take a gander at the Eco Twinkle Light. Created by Kenan Wang, this light uses no batteries or solar power. Instead, it is powered by good, old-fashioned human crank power. Similar to the way you may sharpen a pencil or manually roll down a car window, these are powered by the best renewable energy source of all. As long as you have energy and the ability to turn the crank, you can keep this light glowing.
Jewelry
- Have you ever wanted to carry a piece of living nature with you no matter where you are? Well, you can and you may give all thanks to Icelandic designer Hafsteinn Juliusson for creating her Growing Jewelry line. Every individual piece of this limited edition sterling silver jewelry comes with its own living moss. Yes, moss. Imagine: instead of having a ring with a giant stone, in place of the stone you have a patch of moss. The moss will stay alive—with proper care—for up to 3 months.
- Now here are some eco-accessories you can really sink your teeth into. Australian silversmith Polly van der Glas has been replacing jewelry gemstones with a most unique item: teeth. Although teeth have been used in jewelry of a more tribal nature in the past, these pearly whites are set into sterling silver. All of the teeth are donated, carefully cleaned and sterilized. So far, she has created earrings, rings and necklaces from them; and also has purses and earrings made from human hair available. I wonder what the tooth fairy would pay for teeth set in silver.
Chargers
- For those of you who have an iPhone, you might want to look into getting the iPetals charger. Created by Mac Funamizu, this solar charger fans out into the shape of a flower. Each “petal” contains a solar panel which is used for charging. When you are done using the charger, simply fold it up and be on your way.

- ZyRUS, a Korea-based company, created a new solar-powered charger for portable devices: the Sun Driver. However, solar-powered charging is not the only thing this gadget is capable of. This device can also be used as a USB flash drive, a USB charger and an external battery—that’s 4 functions in 1 awesome item! The Sun Driver contains a built-in solar panel that recharges a 400mAh lithium-polymer battery; but if you don’t get much sun where you are, you can also use a USB port. Equipped with several adapters, it can charge cell phones, GPS devices, MP3 players, and PMPs. As for the flash drive, available space ranges from 2GB to 16 GB.
That’s all the eco-gadgets for this week. Keep an eye out for more awesome green inventions soon!
