Fox Island’s Wind Project goes online

As the largest community-owned wind project on the East Coast, Fox Island’s Wind Farm is positioned to produce 100% of the demand for energy for its residents. Its electricity was formerly supplied from the mainland via underground cables spanning 12 miles; energy losses are unavoidable with the use of this method and is bound to be more costly.
A total combined investment of almost $15 million from for the wind farm was raised through loans and private investors in order to obtain a cheaper, more sustainable and viable energy source for the island. Return of investment comes by way of having a stable supply of lower priced clean energy for the entire island, which benefits the entire community. Read the full article here

Solutions for CO2 from freight?
photo: Bundesautobahn (Flickr CC) The global shipping industry produces 3 billion metric tons of carbon emissions every year. That's as much CO2 as the combined output of Japan, Canada, Mexico and Germany. Greenhouse gas emissions from freight are a serious problem, but there are examples of alternative technology. One that is probably more familiar to most of us is the use of overhead electric cables, like the ones used to power tram lines or trolleybuses. Freight trucks could be powered in...
The “Brinicle” ice-finger of death freezes everything on its path in just a few seconds
Nature can strike relentlessly, and so does water. The “Brinicle” ice-finger of death is one of nature’s most bizarre and dangerous phenomenons, capable of freezing everything on it’s path in only a few seconds. Yes you heard it right: in only a few seconds! And now there is video footage of this ice-finger of death, filmed for the first time by the brave journalists of the spectacular BBC series “Frozen Planet”, who where able to capture this underwater tornado near the...
Government-bred super bees – a possible answer to the question: Who will save the honeybees?
About a third of our diet depends on the pollination of crops by honeybees, including many fruits, vegetables, seeds, beans and spices. Over the past 30 odd years, the honeybee population has been declining. So far, food production has not been gravely affected, but scientists, farmers and beekeepers have cause to be worried. The disappearance of honeybees, termed Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD, is an acute agricultural threat in North America and Western Europe. The latest mass die off of honeybees...
The real Green grocer: Fill your cart with climate smart food
Sweden's newspaper Sydsvenskan reports on how your diet can influence the climate and how to shop climate smart. Above all: eat less meat. Steak and rice do not qualify, nor do soft drinks, Dutch tomatoes or many other imported foods. The good news is that it turns out it's much cheaper to be climate smart: almost 40% according to Sydsvenskan's grocery shopping sample. 'Since 1990 meat consumption in Sweden has risen by 45% and it isn't as if we were unhealthy...
Climate change: How to cope with salty soil
In some coastal areas climate change means a rise in sea levels, leading to an increase in water salinity, which in turn means a high salt content in soil. Increasing salinity in fresh water and soil poses problems for agriculture and fish farming. This is a particularly tricky aspect of climate change adaptation, but coastal communities as well as scientists are finding ways to cope. Hardy varieties of rice, wheat and vegetables are one way, as is shifting from freshwater fish farming...
Chevy Volt: America’s first mass-produced electric vehicle
In 2009 the American auto giant GM filed for bankruptcy, downsized and got bailed out by the U.S. government. President Obama announced that GM would be restructured; a new GM would emerge and 'produce the high-quality, safe, and fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow'. Cue the Chevy Volt. The Volt isn't exactly a hybrid – it's completely battery powered for the first 40 miles (64 km) of use, after which it can shift over to running like any other petrol/gasoline-powered vehicle. So...
Kids Can Help the Environment, Too
So many people place the emphasis of helping the environment or finding a “cure” for the Global Warming crisis on adults. World leaders, scientists, business CEO’s and even parents are constantly pressured to find solutions or “set a good example” for future generations to live by. What they apparently do not understand is with all the environmental problems we face today, age does not matter; everyone must do their part to help. While not everyone is as lucky as Bindi Irwin...
Top 5 Tips for Creating a Healthy, Eco-Friendly Diet
People today are absolutely obsessed with green and healthy eating. And it doesn’t stop there. Manufacturers, stores and labels are all about the healthy eating (supposedly). You’ll see foods listed as any of the following: organic, fair trade, low cholesterol, no cholesterol, 0 trans fat, reduced fat, low fat, no fat, local, seasonal, low sugar, no sugar, whole grain, and so on and so forth. How do you know which is the best option? What would make up the perfect...
Whales and Dolphins Killed in Taiji’s Cove, Despite Ongoing Presence of Activists
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” -Mahatma Gandhi The beginning of September typically marks the beginning of the dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan—where the award-winning documentary, The Cove, was based. However, this month proved to be much different. Ric O’Barry, his son, Lincoln, Sea Shepherd, and a whole group of activists have made their way to Japan to protest the dolphin hunt. It was basically believed that as long...
Psychology and the environment
'Psychological research shows that most people in the UK don't feel personally threatened by climate change because it is vague, abstract and difficult to visualise.' –Adam Corner, Guardian The media is often accused of exaggerating the effects of climate change or of fear mongering, mostly by so-called 'climate skeptics', who refute the science of climate change, global warming or the role of humanity in the processes. These accusations are understandable as the skeptics hold a view that is different or contrary...
