The county of Cumbria in the North West of England has seen torrential rains, harsh winds, floods and dramatic rescues during England’s ‘wettest day on record’. A policeman died while assisting motorists in the town of Workington and hundreds have been made homeless by the floods, which British Environment Secretary Hilary Benn described as a ‘once and a thousand year event’. Worst hit is the town of Cockermouth where bridges were swept away and roads became rivers.

Waters have subsided somewhat, yet more rain in the area is expected. Also affected by heavy rains and flooding are North Wales and southern Scotland.
