While small-scale wind turbines cannot produce the same amount of power when compared to bigger sized turbines, it has still found a variety of other uses. One such example is Core Communications preparation to incorporate small vertical-axis wind turbines to power their cell phone towers on different sites around Southern California.
The turbines to be used are manufactured by Helix Wind, which can generate electricity even in 10 kph wind speed. The project will be put on trial on the first quarter of 2010. Read the full article here

Animal Barcoding Provides Whole New World of Information
Picture yourself working for an inventory company. You are at a store scanning barcodes, one by one, when suddenly you come to an item that will not register on your machine. It’s not because the barcode is invalid, it’s because you’ve stumbled upon a new kind of barcode used to study animals. Technology has been rapidly expanding over the years, and now there’s a whole new way to discover and track animal information. Through genetic testing, scientists can track changing patterns...
Haiti: cholera epidemic spurs witch-hunt with deadly casualties
At least 15 people where killed over the past two weeks in Haiti. They didn’t die from the cholera epidemic or any other disease, at least not directly. All of them where lynched and their bodies burned in the Southwestern province of Grand’Anse after being accused of propagating cholera with black magic. Fear, ignorance and confusion over the fast-spreading cholera epidemic lay at the basis of this violent witch-hunt. In a little less than 6 weeks, more than 1.800 people have...

NASA to announce today: Water on the moon?
NASA is expected to announce break-through scientific news today. Taking these...

Update: European flights still uncertain due to ash from Iceland volcano
The cloud of ash over the UK and much of Europe is continuing to disrupt air traffic as eruptions from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano continue. Lace Hill: Green Spaces, Offices, Hotel Rooms, and Much More!
Some people have done an excellent job at building and perfecting their own version of a Hobbit-hole. Imagine if that concept was expanded to something the size of a large hill (or small mountain) and included homes, office spaces, and hotel accommodations (among other things). Designers Forrest Fulton envisioned such a thing and the location for it is in Yerevan, Armenia. Dubbed Lace Hill, the proposed project basically amounts to a 900,000 square foot (85,000 sq m) hillside. Native plants will...
Melting Siberian permafrost and climate change
Carbon and methane stored in Siberia’s permafrost are being released as Russia’s Arctic experiences warmer temperatures, which cause the permafrost to recede. So far there is insufficient data to gauge just what percentage of methane in the atmosphere is a result of particular natural sources such as swamps and melting permafrost. Manmade sources of methane include power generation, rice farming, livestock agriculture and landfills. From a report by Russia’s BCM News: The fact is that the permafrost covers millions of kilometers of swamps....
