While small-scale wind turbines cannot produce the same amount of power when compared to bigger sized turbines, it has still found a variety of other uses. One such example is Core Communications preparation to incorporate small vertical-axis wind turbines to power their cell phone towers on different sites around Southern California.
The turbines to be used are manufactured by Helix Wind, which can generate electricity even in 10 kph wind speed. The project will be put on trial on the first quarter of 2010. Read the full article here

Guy gets 15 months in prison for dumping over 1m tires
Sometimes you just don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I must confess I did the latter when reading about the arch eco-criminal, über litter bug a.k.a. audacious tire thug who illegally dumped over a million tires in remote spots of English countryside during the course of a single year. It’s a lousy, shameless crime, but it’s also funny. I mean, was he going for a world record in tire dumping, or as the English say ‘tyre rubbishing’? And he’s been given...
European Perspectives on the Environment: “Make Love, Not CO₂”
Europeans: what is a Green city? EU Tube, the European Union’s Audiovisual Service youtube channel, produces informative and sometimes simply promotional videos about various issues concerning the EU. Many of EU Tube’s videos have an environmental bent, some getting their message across more effectively than others. As far as Green propaganda, I like this one: Make Love, Not CO₂. In 30 seconds it gives several simple visual tips on how to conserve energy and live more intelligently. It does so with...
Second volcano erupts on Java: Mount Bromo spewing hot ash
While the Merapi volcano on the Indonesian island of Java is still active, a second volcano – Mount Bromo – erupted today, around 5:40 pm local time. Mount Bromo, a volcano located about 275 km (170 miles) east of Mount Merapi, spew dark grey ash cloud of half a kilometer (0,3 miles) into the air. Although the Bromo volcano erupts at least once a year and although it currently does not pose a treat to the residents of the region surrounding...
Breaking: Gulf oil leak now thought to have been leaking up to 40,000 barrels a day
A new estimate has been made regarding the oil that has been leaking from the damaged well in the Gulf of Mexico: 20,000 to 40,000 barrels per day, or 840,000-1.7 million gallons (3.2-6.4 million liters). This estimate comes from the head of the US Geological Survey and is around twice as much oil as was previously gauged to have been escaping from the well. Scientists used new high definition footage provided by BP after demands from the US Congress, according to...
COP15: And So It Begins…
Sunday, December 6th, 2009, marked the final convergence of delegates to negotiate terms for a climate change treaty. Today—December 7th, 2009—marks the beginning of the biggest climate change conference in world history. Today we will begin to see if the last two years of talking will lead to serious action. Today we will start to see where the future of the environment lies. To quote a recent statement from the U.N.’s top climate official, Yvo de Boer: “Time is up. Over the...
Save The World, Become A Zombie!
Zombies could easily become the next mascot for a green lifestyle. Not only do they travel by foot, rather than using energy consuming, pollution creating vehicles; they also are prime examples of living a reuse-driven lifestyle. People are starting to see the good potential in zombies (much like the end of “Shaun of the Dead”), and are lining up across the world to join the ranks of these lumbering undead. Zombie Walks are becoming the latest concept for fighting against climate...
Videos of China’s oil spill and cleanup
Here are two video reports on the oil spill cleanup efforts in China’s Yellow Sea. Two oil pipelines exploded on the 16th of this month in the major port city of Dalian in northern China, resulting in a massive fire and the largest oil spill in Chinese history. The pipelines have now been repaired, but the environmental damage of the spill will be felt for years to come. The oil has polluted an area of 430 sq km. The first video is a...
Environmental First: Deepest Fish in the World Captured on Film
For the first time ever, the deepest living fish in the world—a species of snail fish—has been captured on camera in the southern hemisphere. Photos of the fish were taken at a depth of roughly 4.7 miles (7.6 kilometers) in the Kermadec Trench off the New Zealand coast. Bearing a resemblance to those found in the Japan Trench, it was actually determined to be a different species. Both species were discovered by the international research team Hadeep. The research team had to...
Russian Oil and Gas Company Rosneft To Further Imperil Endangered Gray Whale
Western Gray Whales are already perilously close to extinction, but Rosneft will pursue their seismic surveys despite the well-publicized risks Russia's good news - that the country plans to set aside huge swaths of land for conservation - has been surpassed by a deluge of subsequent bad news. Heat waves led to fistfuls of citizens succumbing to vodka-induced drownings, and then this last week devastating fires have destroyed forests and left Moscow saturated in smoke. Against this backdrop of environmental and...
Segmented sleep: Research says we should sleep 2x per night
I’ve been noticing lately that most nights I tend to sleep for 4 hours and then lie awake for a while, maybe up to two hours, before falling asleep again. I don’t think I’ve always done this, and have been dismissing it as a consequence of getting older. But a couple of articles from last week have got me thinking that it’s a natural, normal thing to do. As someone who has wrestled with sleep issues for most of my life, I...
