EU on track to meet or exceed its goals on carbon emissions reduction

Of late, the 27-strong European Union member nations have attained an estimated 13.6% lower carbon emissions than the base year level 1990. Only two EU members, Cyprus and Malta set no emissions target. Cyprus’ main export is potatoes and citrus fruit. Malta is 100% oil powered.

The Kyoto legislation was designed to increase the adoption and development of renewable energy from solar and wind sources while discouraging the use of fossil fuels like oil and coal.

This stance towards more renewable energy was made possible through effective legislation throughout the European Union that has resulted to lower carbon emissions and still being economically sound.

These latest figures on carbon emission reduction can be attributed to policies and measures such as emission-saving projects carried out in third world countries, planned forestation and reforestation activities and the like. Read the full article here
